Holography Workshops for Students

Laser Pioneers
- An introduction to lasers, optics, photonics (and holography).

Discover the amazing light properties of the laser.

Description: Laser Pioneers continues to be a popular workshop for students interested in lasers, photonics and optical sciences. This workshop expands on the Holography workshop, and adds a more comprehensive list of topics to explore. Going back as far as the 1980's, this workshop was part of my programs and science camps at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Liberty Science Center in New Jersey, and The Discovery Center at Lehigh University. I continue to update the program with new and revised topics as they become available (and relevant to today's real-world useage). In this class, the student will explore:

  • How Lasers Create their Special Light
  • Reflection and Refraction
  • Fiber Optic Communication
  • Measuring Focal Lengths of Lenses
  • Working with Coherent Light
  • Understanding Polarization
  • Laser Light Voice Transmission
  • Solar Powered Lasers
  • Examples of 3-Dimensional Holograms
  • The Future of Lightwave Technologies . . . and more.

As always, the workshop provides the student with a strong foundation of knowledge -- at an introductory level -- which can be used to build upon in the future. An understanding of lasers, optics and photonics is essential to anyone expecting to one day be involved in the world of communication technologies, medical imaging, visual arts, or computing (photonic circuits, holographic data storage).

As an option, an actual 3-dimensional hologram can be made in the laser lab (see below) for a small additional fee to cover time and lab materials. Regardless of which you choose (standard or make a hologram versions), you can be assured of the finest, time-tested private instruction. Photos or video recording is always permitted for your project documentation.

Schedule: 2.5 Hour Workshop (standard)
3.0 Hour Workshop (make a hologram)
Mondays thru Saturdays
Day or eve., hours by appointment (check available dates)
Prerequisite: General Science Interest / Middle- to High-School Students
Fee: $165 (standard) / $200 (make a hologram)
Instructor: Frank DeFreitas

OPTION:
All of the above, plus learn, set-up, and make a hologram in the lab that you can take home with you. Add $50 for time and lab materials. Holograms are on professional, 4 x 5-inch holographic glass plates (not inexpensive film).
