Leaving soon...

This page is now not only a "gravesite", but a soon-to-be deleted entity, thanks to a run in with Verizon. Want to here a personal rant? Read on. This page is a personal first hand experience. Take it for what it's worth.

I've been with Enter.Net for many, many years. Since the dial up days, actually. And I've had a 1 Mbps service through them for (somewhat less) years. So I'd always recommended them.

Unfortunately, in today's internet, 1 Mbps ain't much of anything. So when I received an offer from Verizon stating they could give me 1.5 to 3.0 Mbps, for only $5 more a month that I was paying, I looked around Enter.Net's site to find out what speeds they were offering and found --- well, not much info. They talk about offering "high speed" DSL and that's about it.

This offer came right about when my Enter.Net account was up for renewal, and after typing my phone number into Verizon's website and waiting for it to check ... well, something presumably, it assured me that, oh yes, 1.5 to 3.0 Mbps was definitely available for that line. Reluctantly, I decided to switch providers.

4/4/2011 -A week had went went by, and no self install kit arrived. I called to ask why not. After threading the Verizon voice-menu-of-doom, I finally got to a person and asked why. I was told "it's in a 'pending error' status." I had to prompt them to explain this. Eventually I learned that it meant that oops, Verizon's mistake. No matter what the computer said, my line was too far from the central office and that package wasn't available afterall. They were, however, (without checking in with me) downgrading my service to a 1.0 Mbps instead and as soon as they got that set up, they ship that self install package.

Now since 1.0 Mbps I already had through Enter.Net, and since I'd been with Enter.Net many years, I cancelled when I heard this. No point in switching everything over if you aren't getting an upgrade anyway. That was that, I thought, and renewed with Enter.Net for another 6 months.

4/5/2011 - I get a robocall leaving a message on my answering machine advising me my activation date was Friday, 4/8. I called back, navigated the voice menu of doom again, and asked the person I (eventually) got through to why I had an activation date when I had cancelled it the previous day. I was told that the cancellation must not have gone through because it was in a 'pending error' state. But (I was assured) they would happily take care of it. It was definitely being cancelled this time. Uh huh.

4/8/2011 - I lose internet service. Modem says I'm connected, but can't reach the internet through it. I called Enter.Net and tech support told me it "wouldn't be the first time" Verizon switched someone over even though they weren't supposed to and I really should call them. I called Verizon (again with the voice menu of doom) and was assured (eventually) that it was all just a terrible mix up and it would be corrected in 48 hours. "So, by the end of the weekend?" I asked. "Yes," I was assured.

4/11/2011 - Monday came, still no internet. I called Verizon (VMOD, again), and was told, "Oh no, you were misinformed. That's 48 BUSINESS hours." This conversation escalated to a shouting match with a representative haughtily informing me "Believe it or not, I've been here quite a while and know what I'm talking about."

4/12/2011 - Lost DSL signal (blinking green light). So, Verizon did NOT restore things to the way they were as promised, but simply cut off service. Still, I thought, at least now that they are out of the way, surely I can call Enter.Net's tech support and get things straightened out. Right?

Wrong. Enter.Net's tech support informed me that their service is through Verizon's lines and therefore ONLY Verizon can fix something like this. There was "nothing" Enter.Net could do --- unless I wanted to pay a $60 connection fee to have the hook me up as a new customer.

4/13/2011 - Called and ordered cable internet package from a competitor. Also got digital phone through the cable modem, so Verizon becomes entirely obsolete. Now have 15 Mbps service (five times what I was looking for from Verizon) plus phone for a decent price.

Since Enter.Net "couldn't" help me when I lost the service I prepaid 6 months ahead for, I asked for a refund for the service they weren't providing me, half expecting some standard company line about how there was a no refund policy or something. Imagine my aggravation when I got NO RESPONSE OF ANY KIND instead.

OK. Still trying to figure out what the phrase "full service" means in Enter.Net's promotions, but... whatever. Since I'm stuck with six months of non-service, I expect this web page and my web mail at least to remain active till the end of the term I paid for, so since I have nothing else to post here, thought I'd tell everyone why this page died.

Moral: Beware of Verizons offering speed boosts, and don't think just because they say it's available on your line it really is. Better still, go cable.
