Pennsylvania PIAA District XI
2007-2008 Season
High School Wrestling

All of District XI mourns the loss of John Toggas, past coach of the Parkland Trojan Wrestling team, who was tragically lost to a traffic accident over the weekend. Our prayers are with John's family and the entire Parkland organisation.

Refs are People Too!

Editorial by Rans
Saturday March 28, 2008

You know how sometimes, when you scratch the surface of something, you find a surprise underneath?

Well, I experienced that last night. I was honored to be invited to the end of season Referee's Banquet where I experienced a behind the scenes, scratched-the-surface, heart-warming event. It started with the selling of raffle tickets. Yeah, you've all experienced that if you've attended the District XI and Regional Tournaments where those pesky referees who are not working in stripes are pushing a 50-50 raffle. I bet you thought that their "50%" went to the District XI Right Honorable Referee Retirement Fund, didn't you? Well, if you did, you are wrong, and you might be surprised to learn that for no reason other than that they care
alot about the wrestlers, they give out schlorships!

The bigger surprise of course, is that it isn't just the money you threw in the bucket for a chance to win that supports these schlorships, at the banquet the referees bought a couple hundred dollars worth of tickets towards 31 prizes that were donated for the event by.....yup, those same referees.

It was a pleasure to experience the humble honor felt by 4 very deserving, very intelligent high school seniors, selected on the merit of an essay submitted to the DXI Referee Chapter, reflecting their scholastic and wrestling qualifications, and the sportsmanship they had shown through the season. There was resounding applause as they were each called to the front of the room and awarded a check for $1000 in scholorship towards their upcoming college careers. The young men were Eddie Parliman of Lehighton. Victor Konno of Northwestern Lehigh, Chris Moyer of Parkland, and Jake Finnocchhio of Freedom. Each spoke for a moment giving thanks to the DXI referee chapter for the honor and doing a fine job of representing thier school.

The chapter also awarded Sportsmanship banners to the coaches from Northwestern Lehigh in AA and Bangor in AAA to hang in their gyms honoring them for their sportsmanship on and off the mat.

All-in-all, I had an opportunity to meet alot of men I had only seen in stripes, in a relaxed and friendly environment, doing somethign very special, for some very deserving young men. So the next time you are at a match, and don't agree with a call thats being made, remember that these guys are not just like the guy sitting next to you in the stands, they are different from you and me, they are truly making a difference for the kids. Perhaps it's time for some applause instead?
