Reports on 1996 Appearances
in reverse chron order

December 9, 1996 at Tower Records in Seattle was the last show for this round of promotional appearances. Throughout the last two months many people have described Justin Hayward at his shows and autograph sessions with such words as gracious, friendly, kind, happy, funny, and affectionate; the music itself as wonderful, excellent, and better than ever. Here's hoping that the rumored spring tour materializes.
Possibly in response to a request from audience members, Hayward played Blue
Guitar for a full house at the
Flanders Street Brewpub in Portland for Justin's show on December 8. Paul
Duchene of The Oregonian gave the show a favorable review on Tuesday December
10th, saying among other things :
Moody Blues' Hayward still has voice, sincerity More than 200 die-hard Moody Blues fans crammed Flanders Street Brewpub on Sunday evening for a disarmingly casual solo set from frontman Justin Hayward.(About 30 even die-harder fans watched him from the sidewalk.) Hayward stopped on his way to catch a plane in Seattle, after a three-day Moodys gig at Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas. The hourlong accoustic show was one of a handfull promoting his new CD, "The View From The Hill." And the view from Haywards hill remains much the same. His themes still span the vocabulary of personal ads, concentrating on love, sea-shores, mornings, freedom, spring and belief. Both his voice and his sincerity remain remarkably clear after 30 years. <SNIP> Hayward was amialbly chatty between songs, bending down so the crowd at the back could see him on the brewpubs high "Juliet balcony." He signed dozens of CDs afterward - a task that took almost as long as the show. -Paul Duchene |
A report by Gary Bishop indicated that Justin met everyone in line. This took much longer than the hour long set.
December 7, 1996 - Borders
Books in Santa Monica, CA : A few technical problems at
the Santa Monica performance resulted in a slightly shorter show than his previous shows,
which were on the order of 1 hour.
On December 6, K105 in Portland
inteviewed Hayward for about 15 minutes on the subjects of
the making of View and on the future of the Moody Blues. They also played The
Way of the World.
Justin promoted his new album on December 5 & 6th via the QVC shopping channel. This appearance
included a performance of The Way of the World and Troubadour and offered merchandise such as a limited edion plaque and a bundle of
The View From The Hill and his recently rereleased CD, Moving Mountains.
San Juan Capistrano, California's Coach
House concert on December 3 was basically the same show
as the one on December 2. The setlist was the same except for the addition of The Land of Make Believe. Mike Boehm wrote a review for the LA Times.
Unfortunately, now they're asking for $$ to read it. :-(

L to R : Paul Bliss, Justin Hayward, Mickey Feat
On December 3, TV audiences
finally got to enjoy a live performance of The Way of the World on The Family
Channel. Hayward also sang Nights in White Satin and
briefly discussed the making of The
View from the Hill on the Home and Family show. Both
songs were performed acoustically in an outdoor setting. The show hosts appeared quite
taken with Justin's music and were quite complementary of his work. Comments about the
show may be sent to Home and Family.
The December 2 concert at House
of Blues in LA had the following set list: In Your
Wildest Dreams, Driftwood, It's Up to You, Children of Paradise, Troubadour, The Way of
the World, Forever Autumn, The Voice, The Actor, Watching & Waiting, Something to
Believe in, Broken Dream, The Story In Your Eyes, Billy, Voices In the Sky, Tuesday
Afternoon, Nights In White Satin, Question, and Raised on Love. Hayward was accompanied on some songs by Mickey Feat,
Gordon Marshall, and Paul Bliss. A local flute player
joined them on some numbers as well.

At JH's November 26 Tower Records appearance in New York, even more changes were made to the performance. The setlist now includes eleven songs: Tuesday Afternoon, The Way of the World, In Your Wildest Dreams, Forever Autumn, Driftwood, It's Up to You, The Land of Make Believe, Nights in White Satin, Troubador, and Raised on Love. Maggie Clarke's summary of events indicates that he did Troubadour after someone in the audience requested it. He signed autographs and posed for pictures as usual after the performance.

The November 22 Tower Records appearance in Las Vegas was slightly different than previous appearances. Hayward added It's Up to You to the setlist. The rest of his performance was the same as those described below.

Several members of Lost Chords wrote about JH's appearance at Crow's Nest in Chicago on November 20. Apparently this was virtually identical to the Minneapolis show and
autograph session described below. Everyone seems to have had a wonderful time.
Nancy Tesdahl gave a great review on Lost Chords for the Minneapolis appearance on November 19. Hayward performed
eight songs including The Way of the World and Children
of Paradise from The View from the Hill. Nancy reported that he interacted with
the audience and gave a great performance. After a short break, he returned to sign
autographs, chat with fans, and pose for pictures.
Apparently the JH appearance on NBC
Weekend Today was either changed from November 16th to November 17th or the
date given was originally incorrect. In addition, many of NBC's affiliates broadcast local
programming instead of NBC Weekend Today from the network feed. Stacey Kronenfeld did catch the show and said that he
was interviewed, then performed Children of Paradise. In addition, Hayward closed
the show with In Your Wildest Dreams as the credits rolled.
Justin Hayward's appearance on
the Fox TV show After Breakfast on Wednesday, November 13 was disappointingly brief, although he was there for the entire show. He was not given the opportunity to perform or to
discuss the album. The network's business manager told
Randy Salas that at least 50 letters were faxed to them as well as "a ton" of
email. The producer of After Breakfast
apologized to the business manager and asked him to ensure that Hayward's fans received
his personal apology. The show hosts apologized in the
following show, but gave a rather hollow excuse for their apparent snubbing of Hayward. After Breakfast plans to have the Moodies on next
Spring.
WAXQ (104.3) in New York hosted
a big promo for View. The raffle winner was John
Conte who won:
