Society of Thoracic Surgeons January '97 National Cardiac Surgery Database Data Analysis for trends in the field of heart surgery in the United States.

    The most common procedure in cardiac surgery is Coronary Artery Bypass. The U.S. national mortality has been trending down from 4.5% in 1987 down to 2.9% for the first half of 1996. Complication rates have been low for each kind of complication. About 67% of first-time coronary bypass patients will be completely free of complications.

    Although the volume of Aortic Valve Replacement is only 5% of the volume of coronary bypasses performed, it is the next most common open heart operation. Also, there has been a downward trend in aortic valve replacement mortality from 5.6% in 1987 to 3.7% in the first half of 1996. Complication rates have also been low for each kind of complication. About 60% of first-time aortic valve replacement patients will be competely free of complications.
