District 1 At Warren Hills
Champions again: Group 4 state runner-up Phillipsburg won its 10th consecutive team title
with a remarkable 11 individual titlists. Juniors Trevor Duddy (119), Dan Buss (125),
Justin Koeller (145) and Dave Post (160) each won his third straight crown for Phillipsburg.
Outstanding wrestler: Justin Joyner (23-6) of West Morris edged Swaneveld of North Warren,
5-4, for the title at 130. Joyner, the second seed, had nipped Phillipsburg's Kyle McRoberts,
6-5, in the semifinals. Swaneveld, the fourth seed, upset top-seeded Justin Lutz of Belvidere,
7-5 in overtime, in the semifinals.
Surprise: The ease of which Brandon Stillo of Phillipsburg cruised through the 112-pound
class was astonishing. Stillo took advantage of the top seed and pinned in both of his bouts,
the first in 43 seconds, the second in 3:17 over Mount Olive's Ryan Vernay in the final.
Back points: Marty Altemose of Phillipsburg, who competed most recently at 189 pounds in
the team tournament on Feb. 16, bumped up to heavyweight and picked up a bronze medal to
enable his team to advance 12 wrestlers to Region 1. Phillipsburg coach Greg Troxell was
named the District 1 Coach of the Year.
