The BAHS Alumni

1885 Club


In 1998, members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way for to honor graduates of Bangor High School who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work. Discussions naturally led to creating a hall of fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the new Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From their collaboration, the 1885 Club was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club will honor distinguished alumni and hold these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of the 1885 Club the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates of Bangor Area High School have been making contributions to mankind throughout the past 100 years.

The Rev. Dr. Allen Miller and Dorothy Eyer Miller
Class of 1929 and 1931
 
The Millers lead a lifetime partnership of Christian Service. Dr. Miller, a graduate of Lafayette and Yale, is an author, editor, and scholar. He was a professor of religion for 52 years. Mrs. Miller, a graduate of Yale School of Music, has had a career as a lifelong storyteller and author. Her books chronicled their world travels and ambassador missions for the United Church of Christ on mission and peace.
Donald M. Jones
Class of 1940
 
Mr. Jones is a community activist and poet. Donald has served in leadership roles throughout the Slate Belt. He has been a charter member of "Loaves and Fish" food bank program and the Slate Belt Homefront, served on the Board of Directors of the Bangor Public Library, a reader and storyteller for the local schools, a member of the St. David's Welsh Society of the Slate Belt as well as a life member and current Vice Commander of the Dyle E. Bray Post 739. Donald has the distinction of being a life member of the "Legion of Honor Chapel" of the Four Chaplains.
Rev. Thomas V. DiFede, O.P.
Class of 1944
 
Rev. DiFede, a graduate of Catholic University, has lived a lifelong commitment to the Catholic priesthood. He has served the Catholic Church for over 40 years in assignments in Kentucky, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, and Ohio. Throughout his pastorates he has been open to new ideas and methods of education, aiming to balance education with academics and spiritual enrichment. The Ohio State Legislature has honored Father DiFede for his dedicated service.
Douglas R. Labar, M.D., Ph.D.
Class of 1972

Dr. Labar, a graduate of Muhlenberg College and the Medical College of Pennsylvania, is a leading neurologist and director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center in New York City. He has received numerous awards and grants for his work and research in epilepsy. His current responsibilities include teaching, clinical care, administrative duties, as well as research. Dr. Labar has been listed in the New York magazine as one of the best doctors in new York in his field of neurology.

Kenton M. Lerch (*)
Class of 1993

Kenton, a graduate of Lehigh University, was a community activist and leader. While at Bangor High School, he was an active member of the concert, jazz, and marching bands, and served as the drum major in his junior and senior years. He was a member of the Lower Mt. Bethel Ambulance Corps and a certified E.M.T. by the age of sixteen. At Lehigh University he involved his fraternity brothers in a number of community projects and helped raise money for cancer research.

Dr. Edward Trayes
Class of 1956
 
Dr. Trayes, a graduate of Albright, Penn State, and the University of Iowa, is a professor of communications and director of the Master of Journalism Program at Temple University in Philadelphia. Dr. Trayes was honored as a Great Teacher Award recipient by Temple University, Teacher of the Year by the Freedom Forum, and by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund of Princeton for his outstanding teaching. The National Association of Journalism Professors named him the first recipient of the Trayes Professor of the Year Award, which was established in his honor. In 1992, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Albright College, where he currently serves as a trustee.
Budd E. Ott
Class of 1947

Mr. Ott is the fifth generation descendent of the Ott family to live and farm in the Bangor Area. he was a member of the Bangor Chapter of FFA as well as the Northampton County $-H Club. He received the highest award of Grand Champion Cow at the first "Blue Valley Farm Show." He has also served as the advisor to the "Youth Cooperators" through the Dairylea Association for 25 years. he has received numerous awards, among which are the Keystone Farmer Award, Star Farmer Award, Pennsylvania Grassland Award from Penn State, and the Pennsylvania master Award. Mr. Ott is still farming over 1000 acres in Upper Mt. Bethel Township.
