One of the goals of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is to recognize the many dedicated teachers and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. This year we are presenting our first annual Distinguished Educator award as part of our banquet program. As with our other categories, nominations for this prestigious award will be accepted throughout the year for the next annual presentation. Either one teacher of one administrator will be selected each year by the selection committee. Nominees for this award need not be graduates of Bangor Area High School, but must have served as a teacher or an administrator in the Bangor Area School District.
Class of 1937 Miss Giaquinto dedicated 40 years to the
Bangor School District as a teacher and librarian. She was
committed to her profession and her community. The daughter
of the late Donato and Maria Botta Giaquinto, she had 8
brothers and sisters; Palma and Christina, Rose Cistone,
Virginia Campanaro, Mary Carrescia, Michael, Dan, and
George. "Miss G" as she was so fondly called by
her students, chose to go to college at a time when women
did not. She accomplished this through the dedication of her
entire family. After graduating as salutatorian of her class
at Bangor High School, she did her undergraduate work at
Marywood College. At Marywood she was president of her
class. She received a master's degree in education from
Lehigh University. She also continued to further her
education at Columbia, New York, and Temple Universities.
Miss Giaquinto was active in her professional life,
belonging to the National, State and Local Education
Associations. She even served as president of the Bangor
Area Education Association. She was also a member of the
Pennsylvania School Librarian's and Library Associations. In
1991, she was honored by Bangor Public Library Board of
Trustees for 31 years of service as a trustee and 26 years
of service as corresponding secretary of the board. She was
also a charter member of the Bangor Business and
Professional Women's Club, serving them as both president
and secretary. Miss Giaquinto helped Dr. Stewart Wolf write
and do research for his book, The Roseto
Story.
