The Bangor Slater Athletic Hall of Fame honors individuals, establishes pride, and preserves the tradition of the Bangor Athletic program by honoring those who have made a significant contribution to athletics in the Bangor Area School District.

Brent Brugler - 1986

 

Brent Bruglar, an outstanding athlete, played Slater basketball for three years under Coach Bill Pensyl. Brent also played baseball for Coach Mike Kreider for two years.

During his high school years he amassed the following awards:

  • 1983-84 Most improved player of the year
  • 1984-85 Outstanding player of the year
  • 1985-86 Offensive player of the year
  • 1985-86 Most Valuable Player
  • Bangor High School Basketball All Time Team

Colonial League awards:

  • 1984-85 Second team
  • 1985-86 First team-top vote getter
  • 1985-86 Colonial League Champs

Press honors:

  • 1984-85 Pocono Record First Team

After High School, Brent attended Elizabethtown College and graduated in 1990. While there he played basketball for 4 years. He was co-captain for 3 years and scored 1,042 points in his college career. He still plays basketball in various leagues around the Lehigh Valley.

Currently he is involved in three different businesses. He is one of the owners of W-Graphics Digital Services, Inc. In 1997 he founded a rental property company, KAB Enterprises, with his business partner. In 2003 he started another company called Bounce'n Beyond, LLC, a moonbounce rental company.

He has been married to his wife Tonya for eleven years, and has three children; Bailey age 7, Tessa age 5, and Talya age 22 months.

Kim Vough Cancellier - 1975

 

Kim Vough Cancellier played field hockey and basketball for the Bangor Slaters, earning three varsity letters in each sport from 1971 to 1974.

As a field hockey player, Kim was a member of the Lehigh Northampton League Championship team. During her senior year, she was co-captain of the team and earned the MVP Award.

Kim was also co-captain of the basketball team in her senior year. During her participation in the Slater basketball program, the team won four Lehigh Northampton League Northern Division Championships and four Lehigh Northampton League Championships. Her impressive statistics follow:

  • Slater career scoring record: 825 points, season mark of 448 points
  • Averaged 22.4 points and 13 rebounds per game
  • Scored 34 points vs. Slatington
  • MVP Bangor High School Girls Basketball
  • Granville Evans, and John L. Williams awards for outstanding female athlete

In 1974 she was a member of the Pocono Invitational Basketball Tournament Championship team and was named First Team All-Tournament player.

Other basketball honors include:

  • Lehigh Northampton League scoring leader: 446 points
  • Lehigh Northampton League rebound leader: 327
  • Lehigh Northampton League first team all-league 1974
  • Easton Express first team all-area

Kim and her husband John live in Bushkill Township with their children; Lauren, age 13 and Connor, age 11. She coaches Connor's boys basketball team at Holy Family School in Nazareth. She also skis and plays team tennis at Northwood Racquet Club.

Dr. Vincent DeFranco - 1951

 

Vincent DeFranco earned three letters each in football and basketball, and two in baseball during his sophomore, junior, and senior years at Bangor High School.

In his junior year, the football team won the Lehigh Northampton League Championship.

During his senior year, Vincent was captain and also the high scorer on the basketball team.

In 1951 he was awarded the Scholar Athlete Award and received the Alexander McKeown trophy for an outstanding three-letter athlete. He was also a member of the National Honor Society.

After high school he attended Blair Accademy for a one year post graduate program. There he participated in football, wrestling, and baseball.

He received a 4-year full tuition scholarship to Colgate University where he played football and baseball. He graduated from Colgate in three and a half years with a B.S. in Natural Science.

In 1960 he graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the United States Army and served for two years from 1960 to 1962.

He has been practicing dentistry since 1962 in East Stroudsburg, PA. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus, and chairman and founding member of the Great Bear Country Club. He is recognized by the Minsi Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America for helping to organize an Explorer Post at Pocono Medical Center. He has volunteered countless hours of dental care during his career to the Monroe County Head Start program. He is also an avid golfer.

Vincent and his wife Concetta (DeFranco) have been married for 44 years. They have two sons; Philip and Vincent; a daughter, Michelle; and two grandsons.

Bryce Onjack - 1969

 

While at Bangor High School, Bryce Onjack was a major contributor to the success of both the Slater football and baseball teams.

In 1968, his senior year, Bryce was co-captain of the football team. That year the team was the Lehigh Northampton League Runner-Up with an 8-2 record. He was honored with an award for being the outstanding player in the Bangor-Pen Argyl game that year.

He was also a member of the undefeated 1968 Lehigh Northampton League Championship baseball team, and the 1969 Lehigh Northampton League Runner-Up team with a record of 9-2-1. He received the Outstanding Player Award for baseball in 1969.

In 1970, Bryce became a member of the AAABA (All American Amateur Baseball Association) when he was chosen to play for Johnny Leone‚'s under-20 team. They were the 1970 AAABA Champions and Bryce was chosen as an AAABA All-Star. He was the leading slugger for the 1970 team.

He was offered and accepted a full scholarship to the University of Wyoming to play baseball. In 1973 he was the team's tri-captain and led Wyoming with a .406 batting average, which was the NCAA's highest batting average for a catcher. His four-year batting average at Wyoming was .322.

In 1974 Bryce signed a major league baseball contract as a catcher with the Detroit Tigers organization, but in 1975, his career ended abruptly with an elbow injury.

Currently, Bryce resides in Bangor and works as a foreman at Hallen Construction Company in NYC.

Jeffrey Swope - 1970

Jeff played three years of varsity football at Bangor High School, earning Honorable Mention All-State recognition as a defensive tackle in 1969. He served as team captain as a senior in 1968-69.

He was named first team offensive and defensive tackle in the Lehigh Northampton League from 1967-1969.

He was also the captain of the track team during his senior year. He currently holds the Bangor High School record for both the shot put ( 50' 10") and the discus (160' 10"). In both 1969 and 1970, Jeff placed 2nd in the discus at the state track meet.

Jeff attended Northampton Community College and graduated in 1973. He went to Ohio State University where he participated in track and then transferred to east Stroudsburg University, graduating with a degree in sociology in 1975.

He is a life-long resident of Bangor and is currently the plant manager at Pocono Foods, Inc. He and his wife, Danielle, have been married for 29 years and have two sons, Jeff, and Eric.

David Vennel - 1978

In the late 70's, Dave Vennel starred as a runner for the Bangor Slaters.He was a 3-year letter winner in track from 1976-1978, and a two-year letter winner in cross country in 1976 and 1977.

Dave was a member of two League Championship Track Teams in 1976 and 1977, as well as a member of the District Championship Cross Country Team in 1976 and the League Championship Cross Country Team in 1977.

Dave holds records at BHS in the 2-mile run and the distance relay team medley. Throughout his high school career he held numerous track and cross country records throughout the tri-league area as well.

He was named as a 2-time High School All-American in track and cross country. He is listed in the 1977-78 edition of "Who's Who in American High Schools"‚ and in the 1977-78 edition of" American High School Athletes".

He placed first in both the league and district meets and 7th in the state meet in the 2-mile run during his senior year.

He is currently working for the United States Postal Service in Bangor. He lives in Roseto with his wife, Jennifer (Lopardo) and has two children, Zachary, 11, and Olivia, 5.
