Athletic Hall of Fame


The Bangor Slater Athletic Hall of Fame honors individuals, establishes pride, and preserves the tradition of the Bangor Athletic program by honoring those who have made a significant contribution to athletics in the Bangor Area School District.

Joe Ciliberti - 1932 (Deceased)

Joe played football, basketball, and baseball at Bangor High School.    He was the starting fullback on the football team, an offensive and defensive power, as well as the team punter.

In baseball, Joe was a star hitter and first baseman who capably captained this team.

In the seventh inning during the Belvedere game on May 28, 1931, with bases loaded, he hit a triple to spark a rally to win the game.   He batted 3 for 5.   On May 20, 1932 in the South Whitehall game, Joe had two doubles, and according to The Bangor Daily News , "...he stole so many bases that the scorekeeper lost count of them."

After high school Joe attended Franklin & Marshall on a four-year scholarship.   He played both football and baseball.   In one memorable game, he played the entire third quarter with a broken leg.

He entered military service in 1941 and served four years in the European Theater.   He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.   He moved to Los Angeles after the service and worked for the Welfare Department of Los Angeles County.   He died in 1986.

David DeRea - 1989

 

David DeRea played four years of baseball, three years of football, and wrestled one year at Bangor High School.

In baseball he was an All League pitcher for two years and an All League first baseman one year.   The team's career record was 52-32 over four years.   In his senior year they were 16-7. They lost to Southern Lehigh in the Colonial League Championship after winning the 2 nd half championship.

Dave had 100 career hits (3 rd all time record), 35 of those were in his senior year (2 nd all time record).   His career batting average was .385 (the 8 th all time record), and .506 during his senior year (the 3 rd all time record.)   He had 12 career doubles, 6 homeruns, 31 stolen bases, 69 runs, 41 bases on balls, and 60 RBI's.   All of these are in the top 10 career records.

Dave, a left-handed pitcher, had the following pitching stats: pitched 183 innings (1 st all time record), 2.95 ERA, 179 career strikeouts, 15 game strikeouts, and 18 career wins (1 st all time record).   All of these are in the top 10 career records.

Dave played three years of football as a two-way starter. In 1986 the team placed 2 nd in the Colonial League with a record of 9-2.   In 1987 the team went undefeated with a record of 12-0 and won both Colonial League and District XI Championships. They repeated as League Champions in 1988 with a 10-2 record and placed second in the District XI Championship.

Dave was the All Colonial League 1 st Team Linebacker in 1987 and 1988 and an Express Times All Area 1 st team member in 1988.

His football career stats are as follows:

  • 22 TD's, four 2-point conversions for 140 total points
  • Rushing - 266 attempts for 1074 yards, 4 yards per carry
  • Receiving - 25 receptions for 435 yards
  • Defense - 6 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries

After high school, Dave attended Northampton Community College and then East Stroudsburg University where he played one year of baseball.  

Dave lives in Bangor with his wife, Cristie, and two Siberian Huskies that he rescued.   He works as a maintenance mechanic for Borealis Compounds in Port Murray, NJ.

Gregory Heard - 1982

Greg Heard was a three-sport athlete at Bangor High School. He was a three-year starter in football as a running back and a linebacker from 1979 to 1981.   He was tri-captain of the team in 1981. He received the following awards:
  • Granville Evans Award for outstanding RB
  • Voice of the Slaters Award for his performance in the Pen Argyl Game
  • Scholar Athlete
  • LARC All Star (leading rusher in the game)
  • 1 st Team Express All Area Team - LB
  • 1 st Team Northampton County All Star Team - RB
  • 1 st Team Colonial League All Star Team - LB
  • 880 yards rushing and 12 TD's in the 1981 season (career rushing - 1011 yards)
  • 7 career interceptions

Greg played guard on the basketball team in 1981 and 1982 and had a career scoring total of 320 points.

He also played three years of varsity baseball from 1980 to 1982 and received the following awards:

  • Coaches' Trophy Award in 1982 - the William Pensyl Award for outstanding team contribution.
  • 1 st Team Colonial League All Star Team - 1982
  • Team leader in runs scored - 1982
  • 2 nd half Colonial League Champs - 1982
  • 2 nd Team Colonial League All Star Team - 1981

Greg is a 1986 graduate of Lehigh University with a B.S. in Accounting.   He received his M.B.A. from Lehigh in 1991.   He lived and worked in NYC and Philadelphia and held various accounting and finance jobs before settling in Baltimore, MD in 1992 with Coopers & Lybrand.   He is now a partner and senior portfolio manager for Maryland Capital Management, LLC, located in Baltimore, MD.

He and his wife, Jill, have a daughter, Madeleine, age 10, and a son, Patrick, age 8.   They live in Buxton, MD.

Krista Janette Keane - 1992

While at Bangor, Krista was a four-year varsity letter winner in track and co-captain of the team in 1992.   She set school records in the 200-meter run and the 4x100 meter relay in her senior year.   Both records have since been broken.  

In 1989 she was District XI individual champion in gymnastics on the balance beam in the advanced division.   She qualified for the state tournament on the balance beam and as an alternate on the uneven parallel bars.

After graduation from Bangor High School, Krista earned her B.S. in Exercise Science from Western Michigan University in 1996.   She graduated from Morton College in Chicago with a Physical Therapist Assistant Degree in 2000.   From 1992 to 1996, she was a four-year starter for the Western Michigan University Women's Gymnastic Team, a Division 1-A program competing in the Mid-American Conference.

She was an Academic All-American during the 1994-1995 season and co-captain of the team in the 1995-1996 season.

She is currently working part-time as a physical therapist assistant.   She lives in Yorkville, IL with her husband, Kevin, and their son, Van.

Josh Mohlmann - 1994

Josh Mohlmann competed in four sports while attending Bangor High School.   He received four varsity letters in baseball, four in basketball, three in golf, and one in soccer.

He was recognized as the Most Improved Golfer in 1993.

In basketball he was named Outstanding Defensive Player for three years from 1992-1994 and received the Sherwin Albert Award

in 1994.   He was captain of the team his senior year.

In baseball he was named 1 st Team Colonial League 3 rd Baseman in 1992, 1993, and 1994, and 1 st Team Colonial League Pitcher in 1993.   He was named 1 st Team Colonial League Academic in 1994.   He served as team captain in 1993 and 1994 and was MVP in 1992 and 1993.   The team qualified for districts in 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994.

Josh represented the BHS baseball program in the Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup in 1992 and 1993, the Keystone State Games in 1992 and 1993 (Gold Medal in 1993.)   He received the Hunky Trumbauer Award for the highest batting average (.511) in Northampton County Legion Baseball in 1992.

Josh was president of his class and a member of the National Honor Society in his junior and senior years.   He graduated fourth in his class.  

After high school he attended Allentown College of St. Francis DeSales and graduated in 1998 with a B.A. in Sports Management with a minor in Business.   He played baseball for the nationally ranked Centaurs at Allentown College.   They were PAC Champions in 1996 and 1997, ECAC Champions in 1997, and NCAA Regional Qualifiers in 1997.   He coached basketball at Bangor Area Middle School in 2001 and 2002.

He is currently teaching mathematics at Harmony Township Elementary School in New Jersey.   He is also coaching the Bangor JV baseball team.   He resides in Upper Mt. Bethel Township with his wife, Cara, (BHS 1994) and daughters, Emma, age 7, and Olivia, age 3.

Todd Strohe - 1982

Todd Strohe played two years of varsity football at Bangor High School, in 1979 and 1981.   He was injured during his junior season.   He played three years of baseball from 1980 to 1982.

His football awards and honors are as follows:

  • 1 st Team Colonial League Defensive End
  • 1 st Team All Northampton County Defensive End
  • Honorable Mention All State Defensive End
  • LARC All Star Game Participant
  • 1 of 7 Lehigh Valley Football Players nominated for the Big 33 Game
  • Bangor High School Football MVP
  • Team Captain
  • Richard Forester Outstanding Defensive Lineman
  • Bangor Policeman Association MVP

Todd set the following records in football:

  • 134 total tackles in a season
  • 91 solo tackles in a season
  • 5 blocked punts in a season
  • 3 blocked punts in a game
  • 25 quarterback hurries in a season
  • 358 total defensive points in a season (points accumulated for making big plays on defense)

Todd was the catcher on the 1981 Colonial League Championship Team and on the 1982 17-4 baseball team that lost in the championship game.   His season batting average was .407.

After high school Todd played football for 1 year at Mansfield University.   He was not able to continue because of a shoulder injury.   He received his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Mansfield University in 1986 and his Master's Degree in Administration of Justice from Shippensburg University in 1991.   Todd was an assistant BHS football coach for 19 years.

He and his wife, Carol, have 3 children: Taylor, age 17; Cam, age 9; and Tatum, age 6.
