The BAHS Alumni

Distinguished Educator Award

One of the goals of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is to recognize the many dedicated teachers and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. As with our other categories, nominations for this prestigious award will be accepted throughout the year for the next annual presentation. Either one teacher of one administrator will be selected each year by the selection committee. Nominees for this award need not be graduates of Bangor Area High School, but must have served as a teacher or an administrator in the Bangor Area School District.

Doris Mack Deen - 1944

Doris graduated from East Stroudsburg State Teacher's College in 1948 with a degree in Elementary Education. Her first three years of teaching were in New Hope-Solesbury School District (1948-1951) where she lived with her husband. In 1952 she returned to the Bangor area and remodeled her grandparents' farmhouse where she still resides.

She was a homemaker and substitute teacher in the Bangor School District from 1963 to 1967. She returned to full time teaching in 1967 when she was hired as a fifth grade teacher at East Bangor Eementary School. When Five Points Elementary School opened in 1968, she moved to that building and taught fourth grade there. She taught social studies within her grade level team and created special day-long events for her students including Natiive American Day and Old Schoolhouse Day, with a picnic at the one-room school, complete with box lunches and vintage attire and games.

Doris moved to the DeFranco School when it opened and taught fourth grade until she retired in 1992. After retiring, she volunteered at the school as a tutor, working with small groups of children who needed help with reading and study skills.

She was inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma in 1983, is a past president, and still continues active membership. She is an active member and past president of the Bangor Women's Club. She is currently a member of First Presbyterian Church in Stroudsburg, where she serves as deacon. She is a life member of the PTA, PASR, and PSERS.

Currently she enjoys bridge, traveling, reading, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
