All public and private secondary schools in New Jersey are invited to participate in the Science League.
Exams will be given in the following categories:
First Level (Non-AP) BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, and EARTH SCIENCE for students currently
enrolled in a first year non-AP course.
PHYSICS I will be for all students enrolled in their FIRST YEAR of physics either, college prep, honors or AP level.
**Schools teaching from the IBO program please send an email to njscil@enter.net letting me know of your special
situation
Second Level BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, Physics II and PHYSICS C for students currently enrolled in an AP level course,
second year course, or enrolled in an independent study program. You must be enrolled in the course in order to take an
exam in that course.
Each school will be allowed up to FOUR STUDENTS, but no more, on a team per category, per examination.
A school can have as many as eight
teams if registered for all eight categories.
PARTICIPATION BY STUDENTS
MUST BE LIMITED TO ONLY ONE YEAR
IN EACH EXAM CATEGORY. DURING A
SEASON STUDENTS
MAY TAKE EXAMS IN ONLY ONE AREA.
Local areas will be established and schools within these areas will meet monthly at a local host school. Schools must
be able to bus in order to participitate in the League. Each participating school must provide transportation for its
students to and from the host school and assume responsibility for obtaining parental permission, insurance, etc.
Examinations will be held only at the designated area host schools. No school may take the examinations separately
at their own location.
At least one teacher from each school must accompany the participating students to the competition. It is preferable
to have one teacher per team. The teachers assist in proctoring and grading the examinations.
A coordinator for each area will be selected by the Science League Office prior to the first exam. The person chosen
will be a liaison between his/her area and the League Office.
All exams are to be taken at the designated school for the area each month. You must be able to bus in order to
participitate in the League. THE ONLY EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE ARE
INCLEMENT WEATHER OR THE
CLOSING OF AN INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL. If inclement weather prevents a whole area from taking an exam, then
every effort should be made to retake the exam in the group setting. If an individual school is prevented from taking
an exam because of either reason above, the teacher will be responsible for contacting the Coordinator to make
arrangements. ALL EXAMS MUST BE TAKEN AND RETURNED TO THE SCIENCE LEAGUE OFFICE WITHIN
ONE WEEK OF THE SCHEDULED EXAM DATE IN ORDER TO BE COUNTED. Results will be posted on the web at
www.enter.net/~njscil

TESTING DATES
FOR THE NEW JERSEY SCIENCE LEAGUE
THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2008; THURSDAY,
FEBRUARY 14, 2008
THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2008; **THURSDAY APRIL 10, 2008
** The testing date for the April will be decided by each local area during the January exam. The date of the April
exam should be a date that all schools in the area can attend. The April exam must be completed by April 30th.
No area may take the April exam during the first week of April.
EXAMINATIONS:
Examinations will be prepared under the supervision of the Director of the league. Exams will consist of
combinations of multiple choice and completion questions as well as problems. The exams will be designed to
require 50 minutes completion time. Where possible the new State standards will be incorporated into the tests.
There will be four New Jersey Science League examinations held on the SECOND THURSDAY of each month at
approximately 4 PM or earlier if possible. The first examination will be in January and the last in April.
Non-programmable calculators are allowed. No student is allowed to use any calculator that uses
Windows OS or Palm OS operating systems.
Chemistry and Physics students will be provided formula sheets for the exams. Topics are listed on the web.
The exams will be sent to the contact teacher at the host school who will be responsible for storing them, unopened,
until the first school arrives. Host schools for the first exam are chosen by the League Office, or by schools registering
to be the first host school, while the host sites for the remaining exams are to be determined at the January exam.
After each examination is over, a refreshment break is held for the students, while the teachers grade the exams. The
Area Record Sheet will be filled in and returned to the League Office, along with the student scan-sheets.
A compilation of all scores will be posted at www.enter.net/~njscil 2 - 3 weeks after the exam. The sooner the scores
are received by the League office, the sooner all scores can be posted on the web. Team scores will be posted along
with the initials of individual student scores.
AWARDS:
Student Awards: All students who have completed three of the four examinations receive certificates noting their participation.
The top 10% of the students in each category will receive a New Jersey Science League plaque. The award winners will be
selected by adding the student’s highest three examination scores. They will be ranked from highest to lowest with ties
taking the place of ranks below the tie.
TEAM AWARDS: The ten schools with the best team ranking in each category in the State will receive plaques denoting
their accomplishment. The team awards are selected in the following way:
-The two highest ranking individual scores from among the student team competing in any given examination will constitute
the team score for that exam. The cumulative team rankings will then be determined by adding the team scores from the
four exams. All schools falling within the top 10 of their testing area will receive an engraved plaque recognizing their accomplishment. An exception will be Physics II and AP Physics C. If less than 50 schools register
for these competitions, then only the top 3 teams will receive plaques.
For all teams receiving plaques a letter of recognition will be sent to their governing Board recognizing their achievement.
Please call the League number if you have any questions and the director will get back to you as soon as possible.
Thank you for your time. Bill Spears Director of NJSL
