Both students
and schools compete for awards. All
students who complete 3 of the 4 exams
will receive a certificate of achievement from the
Science League. Each year 2500
certificates are
purchased with about 2300 being given out to the
students. It would be great to give out
all 2500
certificates and have to order more.
All students who complete 3 of the 4 exams will be
placed in the plaque competition. Ten percent (10%)
of the students receiving a certificate will be
awarded a plaque. Plaques will be
awarded based upon
rank from #1 to whatever point 10% of the
certificated students have been included. The rank comes
from the sum of the top 3 scores for each
student. That means that if 5 students
tie at 8th place in some
testing area by rank, then 5 plaques are given at
that position. When 10% of the students
in an area have
been given plaques, then no others will be
awarded. This results in about 200 to
240 plaques.
Scholarship: Last year
the Science League awarded a scholarship resulting from the teachers receiving
the January, February, and March results from the
web rather than sending out a mailing by the US
Postal Service.
Since every teacher has an email address we can continue the same
scholarship program.
The first place students in Biology II, Chemistry
II, and Physics II will receive a $200 scholarship to be applied
to a college of their choice. In the event of a tie, then the dropped 4th
score will be used as a tiebreaker.
If a tie
continues after the application of the tiebreaker, then the money will be split
between the students.
Schools also compete for plaques
as well. For each exam the top 2 student scores are summed.
This summed score becomes the team score for that
school. All four exams count for each
school.
The sum of all four exams will be used in ranking the schools. Schools are ranked from #1 to #10.
Plaques are awarded to schools being in the top 10 not 10%. An exception will be Physics II
and AP Physics C. If less than 50 schools register for these competitions, then only the top 3 teams
will receive plaques.
