If you should decide to buy a dog, this law requires pet stores and other animal retailers to supply a health certificate from a veterinarian or another written guarantee of the dog's health.
Refunds will be due to any customer who buys a dog that becomes ill or dies from a contagious or infectious disease within 10 days. Otherwise, veterinary bills must be reimbursed or a replacement dog must be offered free of charge. Owners of dogs that die within 30 days have the same options.
Earlier this month, state Attorney General Mike Fisher's office sent out notices of this law to the 460 dog sellers and breeders throughout Pennsylvania. By law, they are required to post a copy of the regulations and also hand them out to new dog owners.
Violators of this act could face a $1,000 civil penalty. If you visit a pet shop and do
not see that this law is posted for the public, please ask the owners why they have not done
so. Also, please report the pet shop to LVARK if they refuse to display the law.
