About the Rajah Temple Gun Club
Over the years, and more recently since the Rahah Potentate's picnic has been held at Willow Glen Park, many Nobles have expressed an interest in forming a gun club consisting of Rajah Nobles. Initial interest began to grow during the tenure of Potentate Dr. Warren H. Fake, who donated two pieces of trap shooting equipment to the Temple to be used at the annual picnic. From this point the idea grew at a much more rapid pace to the point where two traps pits were constructed on Willow Glen property.
In 1976 the Rajah Gun Club finally became a reality when interested nobles met with then Potentate Lloyd H. Behmer to secure his permission to form such a group. Permission being granted and by-laws being approved, the group's first slate of officers was elected. they were: President, Benjamin F. Roth; Vice-President John H. Buchter; Secretary, Grover O. Scott; and Treasurer, Victor H. Young. These newly elected officers were sworn into office on June 24, 1976, and the Rajah Gun Club was on it's way to becoming a very active group.
To date the gun club has a membership of approximately 125 members, and weather permitting, holds a shoot the first Sunday of each month, except for January and February. Our shoots are held at South End Gun Club in Exeter township, also known as Lorraine Gun Club. Usually the shoots from March to August are A.T.A. registered shoots, where you may shoot 100 16 Yd and 100 handicap targets. There is also a doubles event. All shoots are open to the public. From September thru December we travel to the Strausstown Gun Club where we hold a fifty target event for prizes. As with the registered shoots, these shoots are also open to the public.
The gun club meets the third Thursday of the month in our room on the first floor of Rajah Temple, Except for the summer months when we move to South End Gun Club.
Some of the highlights of the gun club are:
* Our Ladies Night, which is usually held in March. This is where we get a chance to wine and dine our ladies and have a special night just for them.
* At the Pennsylvania State Shoot any Noble or Masonic Member can shoot for a Shrine Trophy. Proceeds go to the Shriners Hospital.
* Our next function is the Pote's Picnic which for years was held at Willow Glen Park in Sinking Spring, until being moved to the South End Gun Club in 1998.
*One of the most important dates in the gun club is the Tri-Temple Shoot. There are three Temples involved in this, Rajah Temple of Reading, PA., Boumi Temple of Baltimore, MD. and Syria Temple of Pittsburgh, Pa. Each year one temple hosts the other two Temples, were we shoot for a trophy that travels to the winning Temple to be held until the next Tri-Temple Shoot. The Temple who wins it three consecutive times keeps the trophy and a new one is purchased.
* One of the best functions is the family picnic held in August at the Lebanon Valley Gun Club, which brings the whole family together.
Our main purpose is to promote target shooting, and, at the same time, have fun and
encourage the growth of Shrinedom and Rajah Temple in any way we can.
