MEETING  HIGHLIGHTS - OCTOBER  9,  2009

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

By:  RRC  Secretary  Harry  Hoffman,  W3VBY    (10.29)

From notes taken by VP Art Becker, KB3LDI

The Friday evening, October 9, 2009 RRC meeting was held in the Berks

County Agricultural Center Main Auditorium.

1.  As people entered the meeting prior to 8:00 p.m. Walt Horn, W3OKX,

had people sign the sign-in-book.

2.  In the absence of RRC President Ed Morgan, K3QJ, RRC Vice President

Art Becker, KB3LDI, called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m.  In

attendance were 20 RRC members plus two guests for a total of 22.

3.  Guests were recognized and the wireless microphone was passed

around.

4.  RRC Vice President Art Becker, KB3LDI, announced John L. Bachman

Jr., N3VKI as a new Associate Member of the RRC.  John, N3VKI, was a

former RRC member and we will have an information packet and letter of

acceptance for him at our next RRC meeting.  John, N3VKI, was not

present at this meeting.

Two other Associate Members, Fred Steininger, KB3NHT; and Chris

Schlegel, KB3CZK were not present to receive their information packets

and RRC badges.

5.  RRC Vice President Art Becker, KB3LDI, announced that the 2009 PA

QSO Party is coming up on this weekend ( October 10th and 11th ).  This

year we will have a club station in the local area, using W3CCH, for

club members who do not have a home station or would like to be with a

group.  Those with a Technician license are welcome and we can get you

on the HF bands.  This station will be at the QTH of Mike Wingert,

KB3LDE, and is located off Route 12 (Pricetown Road).  Mike needs some

equipment.  Don McKinney, W3FCT, brought two pieces of coax for Mike's

antenna.  The station will be in operation on Saturday from noon to

around 9:00 p.m. and then back on the air on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. until

6:00 p.m.  (The actual hours of operation will depend on club member

participation).  For directions see Mike, KB3LDE, and there is a sign-up

sheet on the table.  Art, KB3LDI, asked for a show of hands for those

wanting to join with Mike.  (None responded).

In addition, there will be a portable RRC station in the field, located

in Potter County, with five club members.  We will operate using the

call W3BN.  Look for us on 40 meters during the day and 80 meters at

night.  On Sunday evening, they will monitor 3.810 MHz

RRC Board member Laura Hughes, NT3Y, will be operating mobile.

The QSO Party Bonus Station is N3KAE.

6.  Vice President Art Becker, KB3LDI, announced that the Club's Holiday

Banquet will be held on Saturday December 12, 2009 starting at 1:00 p.m.

at Katherine's Katering (Route 222 and 73).  Fran Wagner, KB3GBB,

chairperson of the event gave all the details.  Tickets are available

tonight from Fran Wagner, KB3GBB, and RRC Treasurer Frank Esseluhn,

K3MGO, at $15 each.

Two items were discussed relating to the Holiday Banquet:

Party Favors - Should people bring/receive a gift?  Most people said no

and Fran agreed.  We decided - No gifts.

Gizmo Box - This was a suggestion that people should bring inexpensive

items to be put into these boxes and then drawn later.  This did not go

over well.  Most people said they had enough "junk" already.  The RRC

Vice President Art Becker, KB3LDI, decided that we will do without the

Gizmo Boxes.  Many raised their hand in agreement.

7.  Tonight's talk was on EMCOMM and the Tuesday evening November 17,

2009 Limerick Drill.  Don Boulanger, WA1ELA, is the Berks County RACES

Radio Officer and the Berks County ARRL ARES Emergency Coordinator.  He

introduced Mr. Aaron M. Rhone, a Planning Officer for the Berks County

Department of Emergency Services.  Together they presented a great talk.

We still need more RRC members to sign up for participation in the

Limerick Drill.

8.  RRC Vice President Art Becker, KB3LDI, said he hopes to work all

members of the RRC this weekend during the PA QSO Party.  Remember to

indicate the Reading Radio Club on your summary sheet and include a few

dollars to help with the expenses of the PA QSO Party.

9.  Vice President Art Becker, KB3LDI, closed the meeting at 9:25 p.m.

for a time of fellowship and refreshments.

50  YEARS  AGO  IN  THE  RRC - NOV.  20,  1959 = = = = = = = = =

By:  Rich  Ahrens,  W3WJC    (10.30)

From the minutes of RRC Secretary Al Brailer, W3UQC (SK)

The officers serving the Reading Radio Club, Inc. in November 1959 were:

     President Jim Marx, W3BN  (SK)

     VP Hack Hackerty, W3BOL  (SK)

     Secretary Al Brailer, W3UQC  (SK)

     Treasurer Russ Frederick, W3CDS  (SK)

The regular monthly meeting was not held at Art Gantert's, W3OLG,

Automotive Service Center, 133 Thorn Street, Reading, PA.  Instead,

members of the RRC took a Field Trip and visited the WGAL-TV Channel

8 transmitters located in Hellam Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

Seven mobiles made the evening trip to the WGAL-TV transmitter site

with about 30 members on board.  The drivers were:

Jim Marx, W3BN  (SK)  RRC President

Russ Frederick, W3CDS  (SK)  RRC Treasurer

Stew Ringler, W3EYN  (SK)  RRC BOD Member

   Frank Skowronek, W3ICU  (SK)

   Rich Ahrens, W3WJC

   Lou DeAngelo, K3EUH (Now KG3Q)

   John Freeman, K3CBE

The caravan of seven cars, with 2 Meter AM communications, left 133

Thorn Street at 6:30 p.m. SHARP for the 47 mile trip to the WGAL-TV

transmitter site in York County.

Mr. Jacob Mathiot and his staff escorted the RRC members in small

groups and explained the operation and the equipment used at the

television station.  The WGAL-TV station first signed on the air on March 18, 1949.

It was very interesting to see the latest, year 1959, TV transmitting

equipment.  (Vacuum tubes of course).

At this November meeting, the nominating committee, for candidates

for the RRC BOD, was to report to the RRC membership their list of

BOD candidates.  However, due to the trip to Hellam, Pennsylvania,

the report was postponed to the December 18, 1959 Annual Membership Meeting.

.....that the Voice of America professional HF propagation program

known as VOACAP is now available for FREE.  The United States

Department of Commerce, National Institute for Telecommunication

Sciences, Boulder, Colorado, developed this software.  This is a

great program that is interesting to use and is the results of over

fifty years of USA HF research.  For many years, you had to purchase

versions of this software but now the software is available for FREE

at the following Web site:

http://www.voacap.com/

The above Web site has a wealth of info on how to use VOACAP and the

supporting software.  You might also want to visit the following Web

page for more interesting software that can be used in your hobby of Amateur Radio:

Check into the RRC MEETING ON THE AIR on the Friday evenings that we do

not have an in-person meeting.  The net on 146.9100 MHz starts at 8:00

p.m. with the latest AMATEUR RADIO NEWSLINE report from the West Coast.

We then have an exchange of information that may be of interest to the

members of the Reading Radio Club.  The last part of the net is a roll

call where we usually have 30 to 65 stations check-in.  The net has been

in operation since January 22, 1994.  On Friday October 30, 2009, we had

session number 654 and had 40 stations check in and test their 2 Meter

FM equipment.  The next RRCMOTA will be Friday November 6, 2009 at 8:00

p.m. on the RRC 146.9100 MHz repeater (CTCSS is 131.8 Hz).  Everyone is

invited to tune in and check into the RRCMOTA net.
