13th AIR FORCE SUPPORT UNITS OF WORLD WAR II These units represent some of the truly unsung heroes of World War II. They are the people behind the scenes who kept everything going. Planes can't fly without gasoline to run the motors or runways to take off and and land on. Airfields need protection. Downed pilots need to be rescued. Wounded airmen need to be cared for. Without reconnaissance, bombers wouldn't know what to bomb and without the ordnance group there wouldn't be any bombs to drop or bullets to shoot.
