I am searching for information on my father, Captin Donald E Frease, who served in the 13th Air Force, Guerilla Support Air Party #3. He is listed (and pictured)in a book written by Brayton L. Smith, Jr. which we received in 1984 (four years after my father's death). We have pictures and a diary of my father's and recently discovered that he wanted to be known for his work during WWII. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Patricia Frease Freeman

My dad was in the 13th, 5th BG, 23rd (H). His name was Barney Raglane Pyle Jr. I would love meet anyone who might have known him. I have a picture that he took of a plane called "The Top O' the Mark". I don't know if it was one on which he served as a navigator or not. He was still in the SW Pacific in October of 1945, flying missions along the China coast from Samar.

Is there any way to find out if he was ever a member of the crew of the above mentioned plane....or what planes he flew on a crew member? I don't have any of his materials that used to be at my mom's house before she died.

Thanks,
Dorinda McKnight

My father, George Gray, was a fighter pilot (P38 and 39) with the 67th from Dec. 1943 until June 1945. When he left Palawan, he lost touch with good friend, FRED TRENT GLEASON. Would love to find Trent and put them in touch.

Thanks,

I was trying to get some background information on the unit my uncle Morgan served with during WWII, he was with the 229th AA. There was a message on your site from the gentleman below (ed:FRED L.HEGGI), I tried to email him but it came back. I wasn't sure if we are talking about the same group or not, I always thought my uncle was army like the rest of his brothers. Could you tell me if I am mistaken? My uncle said it was an anti-aircraft unit. What is the difference between AA and AAA?

Thanks,

Researching a B17 named LOS LOBOS. The only photo I have of LOS LOBOS came from the National Archives and shows only the nose of the plane. At the top of the photo it states: Orig 4X5 neg rec'd August 1944 from 13th Air Depot, AAF, APO #502. On the reverse side of the photo it states: B17 LOS LOBOS at the 13th Air Depot Group area on New Caledonia. The name Rover Boy was added to the plane after this photo was taken. Under closer inspection of the piece of airskin you can see that there was another name before LOS LOBOS. I am looking for additional photos of the plane, serial number, crew members, etc.

Thanks,

By coincidence, both my Battalion Commander and I have fathers who served in the 13th during WW2. They were both Liberator men in the 5th Bomb group.

My father, SSG Calvin (Cal) B. Kristen, was a nose gunner in the 72nd and flew missions from mid April '45 till September '45. Unfortunately my father passed away the year before last. While we had talked allot and he was quite open about his experience, it was not until then that I began to learn allot more about his wartime life. In his den I found his 'Tour Book' "HISTORY OF THE FIFTH BOMB GROUP", as well a leather bound scrapbook of snapshots and a couple of handmade 'C' ration tin cigarette cases. I plan to scan the photos and send them along to the association later. My father went on to fly commercially and retired from the airlines after a very rewarding career and these are the years I am most familiar with. Any more information would be appreciated.

My Commander, LTC Daryl W. Blohm's father flew as a pilot in the 31st. Unfortunately his father never talked about his military experience and now suffers from Alzheimer's so he does not really remember anything from those days. My Col. believes he was a Lieutenant during that time and would deeply appreciate any information. His father's name was Herman O. Blohm.

Both of us are second generation pilots, currently we are flying AH64 A model Apaches out of FT Knox KY.

Again thank you for your time and any information you can provide us.

Sincerely,
Kevin F. Kristen

My uncle, 2nd Lt. Charles E. Konkle was a bombardier with the 13th from March 1943 through October 10, 1943 when his B-24D was shot down between Choiseul and Bougainville Islands. Neither he, his plane, or any of the crew were ever found. At the time of his death, he was assigned to 72nd Bomb Squadron Group H. During his time in the 13th, he also served in 5th Bomb Squadron Group H, and 23rd Bomb Squadron Group H.

I have many of his pictures, and a number of his papers, including his AAF Form 5's which show all his missions. I was born less than a month after he was listed missing in action, and am named for him. I feel as thought I knew him, but of course I did not. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who knew him, and would be glad to share any of the information I have about his service with the 13th.

Thank you,
Charles E. Russell

Email address removed at poster's request. If you have legitimate information related to this posting please contact the webmaster.

My father, Ray L. Thompson, was a B-25D/G pilot/co-pilot in the 75th BS, 42BG, 13AAF, from April '43 to July '44. He was flying CP with 1LT E.G. Keefer as PIC when their B-25 was shot down off Rabaul in '44, and a photo feature showing the crew rescue by Navy PBY appeared in the 5 SEP 1944 issue of LOOK Magazine. My father -- known during WWII as "Pappy" and later as "Tommy" -- retired from the Air Force on 31 May 1962 and died on 5 January 1991. I'm looking for any surviving crewmen who flew with him in the Pacific; the crew of the shot-down B-25D-1 included Keefer, D'Amico, Fredenburg, Creech, and Sandel (using my father's spellings of their names). Any help with contacts for same will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Steve Thompson

I was in the 5th Army Airways Communications System (AACS), under Col. Nichols HQ Brisbane, and was "sent" up to Sansapor. I was on the island the moment your first plane landed. I think it was a P-38. We had a few raids when the moon was full. Zero's and Bettys. I positively remember the construction of the landing strip and when the first plane landed. All was quiet until about October 1944 when the first Japs came over. I would like to communicate with any one who was on Sansapor or Middleburg. I was NCOIC (T/SGT) in charge of 33 men with mission to establish AACS radio station on the island. I was operating the station one night when the shrapnel went through the radio shack. This was on the south side of the runway ! Please someone give me a call before we are all gone....

Thank you,

My father, Warren Cabral, was a Navy Radarman 3/c assigned to Argus Unit 1 (Fighter Director Radar Unit) and landed on Woodlark Island on June 30th, 1943. The island was to be a forward air base for planes to secure the entrance to the Solomon Sea and range over the approaches to New Britain. It took the SeaBees 13 and a half days to build the airstrip there, a record at that time, for which they were awarded a Presidential Unit Citation. On July 21 the airstrip was declared operational and two days later the first P-39's of the 67th fighter squadron began to arrive. He remembers the pilots that he met to be small in stature, had to be to fit into the P-39 cockpit, butlong on guts! He recalls plotting bogies coming down from Rabaul at night and the pilots would take off, even though they were not night fighters, to orbit north of the island for an intended ambush. He also recalls the pilots, after taking off, would buzz their camp early in the morning, just to wake them up. One of the pilots had a habit of doing a roll on takeoff, until one day the engine missed and he went in. These are just some of the stories I have gathered about life on Woodlark. I am trying to compile a history of the Woodlark experience. If anyone has any stories, pictures or facts I would love to hear and see them!

Thank you,
Todd Cabral

My old high school buddy, Lt. Howard Overby, was in the 13th AF flying P-38s. It was the Muskogee (Oklahoma) High School. I'm pretty sure that Howard was in the 347th Fighter Group, but I don't know what squadron. He moved to Sansapor in 1944 and, before I could get up there to see him (from Nadzab) he was reported missing in action. I am trying to find someone who knew him or can tell me more about the 13th AF in Sansapor. I spent 3 years in New Guinea with the Famous 5th AF!

Thank you,
Chief Harris
