Posted: 05/10/2005 Stuart Nichols snichols2@earthlink.net Looking for people who knew my father, Leo Carter Nichols. Born in Texas. Trained first as radio operator in artillery. Accepted by flight school as an enlisted pilot. His training buddies would end up in the "Lost Battalion". From flight school he went to 13th AF, 5th Heavy as a bomber pilot. I have his service record, but it doesn't show sq. or bases - Just "Guadalcanal Area" - until May 44 when he went to Munda. He was in 5th Heavy Apr. 43 to May 44. He had souvenir(?) banners for Solomons, Georgia, Bougainville. Any information, photos, guidance, etc. that could help me see what his life was like at the time would be welcome. Thank You Stuart Nichols Posted: 05/08/2005 Kevin Anderson k9iua@yahoo.com I am trying to track down whether for sure an uncle of mine, Roy L. Anderson, a B-25 pilot whom I was told was assigned to the 13AAF, was indeed with the 42nd BG. And if so, which squadron? Finally, his plane was called "Powerhouse" with the picture of a bulldog chewing on a Japanese flag below the name - does anyone recognize that? Thank You Kevin Anderson Posted: 05/08/2005 Steve Shalot sshalot@optonline.net My uncle, Philip Sundick, was a radio operator-gunner on a B-24 in the 13th AAF. He was part of the famous Balikpapan raid on Sept. 30th, 1944. They took off from the island of Noemfor, off New Guinea, and remained airborne for 17 hrs---The longest flight mission of the Pacific theater. His plane, had a Belly Dancer painted on the nose. He served with Gilbert Tipton, Norm Newborn, and Wilbur Bowen. If anyone has any more info on this raid, or the men, or my uncle Phil, please let me know! Thank You Steve Shalot Posted: 05/08/2005 Lynn Stetler Allison lra@stetlergribbin.com I'm looking for info on my uncle, Keith Stetler, who I'm fairly certain served in the 13th Air Force as an officer in the photo unit. I have 2 group photos that his son gave me which were taken in the jungle along with a single photo of Keith with the inscription, June 1943, 13th Air Force Photo Unit. I wanted to find out what specific unit he was with and also what and where that unit served. If anyone actually knew him during the War and provide stories, great. Thank You Lynn Stetler Allison Posted: 05/08/2005 Bob Lieb rlieb4@charter.net I would like to know anything about the 905 Army Engineers that sreved with the 13 Air Force. I might be able to help that person, but when I went to the page, I could not find the reference quoted in the Google page. At any rate, if anybody is still interested they can contact me. Thank You David Grey Posted: 05/08/2005 Bryan Elliott bryan.elliott@hickam.af.mil My Grandfather served in WWII as a belly gunner. His name is Clifford L. Brown from western New York. If you knew him please contact me. Thank You Bryan Elliott Posted: 05/08/2005 Todd Cabral mtcabral@charter.net My father, Warren Cabral, was a Navy Radarman 3/c assigned to Argus Unit 1 (Fighter Director Radar Unit) and landed on Woodlark Island on June 30th, 1943. The island was to be a forward air base for planes to secure the entrance to the Solomon Sea and range over the approaches to New Britain. It took the SeaBees 13 and a half days to build the airstrip there, a record at that time, for which they were awarded a Presidential Unit Citation. On July 21 the airstrip was declared operational and two days later the first P-39's of the 67th fighter squadron began to arrive. He remembers the pilots that he met to be small in stature, had to be to fit into the P-39 cockpit, but long on guts! He recalls plotting bogies coming down from Rabaul at night. The pilots would take off, even though they were not night fighters, and orbit north of the island for an intended ambush. He also recalls the pilots after taking off, would buzz their camp early in the morning, just to wake them up. One of the pilots had a habit of doing a roll on takeoff, until one day the engine missed and he went in. These are just some of the stories I have gathered about life on Woodlark. I am trying to compile a history of the Woodlark experience. If anyone has any stories, pictures or facts I would love to hear and see them! Thank You Todd Cabral Posted: 03/02/2005 Robert Salling bobhookpilot@charter.net Yesterday while looking up myself on Google I stumbled upon a listing for Robert Salling in the 67th fighter group of the 13th air force. I would like to make contact with him, his family, or anyone who knew him or what happened to him. Even stranger than the identical name is the fact that I also was an Army aviator, helicopter pilot in Vietnam with 1st Calvary Division. Even stranger is my dad was a SeaBee on the Canal when the 67th shot Yamamoto down. Look forward to hearing from anyone. Thank You Robert Salling Posted: 03/02/2005 Miles Morrison morrison618@msn.com My grandfather, Staff Sergeant Eulis S. McDaniel, served as a B-24 tailguner in the 13th Air Force, 307th Bomb Group, 372nd Bomb Squadron. The squadron was the "Long Rangers." He flew 43 missions over the Pacific. If you know about him or anyone in this group, please contact me. Thank You Miles Morrison Posted: 03/02/2005 Mark E. Gronek gronekmj@charter.net My Father was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He passed away in August of 1973. I have been searching for my Fathers past war record to no avail. I requested his record from the National Archives in St. Louis and was informed his record was lost in the 73 fire. His name was William Walter Gronek and he served from September '41 to October 45. His rank at the end of the War was corporal. He was born in Hamtramck (near Detroit), Michigan in 1918. My Mother told me he served in Hawaii, Guadalcanal and the Philippines. He was sent to an Army hospital in '44 when he contracted Phylariasis and spent the next 6 months in hospitals in San Diego, California and Cleveland, Ohio until he was finally discharged from the Army in '45. He never spoke of his experiences during the war with any of his family. It has always been a hope that we could find one of my Dads past friends that knew him during the War and could shed some light into his past. I'm not even sure he was in the 13th Air Force. Since the campaigns of the 13th align with the ones my Mother remembers my Father being involved with, you never know. If anyone knew my Father during the war or knew him during his convalescence, please feel free to email me with what ever information you may have. Thank You Mark E. I have a number of his photos from that period, including a group photo taken on an island and a picture taken of a daylight B-24 raid, with planes flying in the foreground and the target smoking heavily. I also have reconnaissance photos of a Philippine target. He slipped the surly bonds of earth and touched the face of God for the last time in August 1986. Anyone who'd like to see these photos or may have more information on the missions my grandfather flew can contact me at the e-mail address above. Thank You Brendan Gage Posted: 01/09/2005 Judy Loken jlsynergy@earthlink.net I'm writing for my father, Les Loken (93 years old), who was with the 13th Army Air Force Bomber Command Headquarters, starting on Guadalcanal in late 1943 and throughout the Pacific areas until V-J Day in 1945. His C.O. was Gen. William A. Matheny. I have a film background and I want to make a documentary about his experiences during WW II. He once had a footlocker full of memorabilia from his Army days, but it was unfortunately lost years ago, so he doesn't have much to let me record for the film. I would love to hear (and so would Dad) from anyone who served with the 13th AAF during WW II and might have any photos or souvenirs to add to this documentary - especially anything from 5 combat missions that Dad volunteered to accompany as a tail gunner with 3 bomber groups: 3 missions with the 42nd Bomber Group (B-25's) stationed at Russell Island and flying to Rabaul, and 2 missions with the 5th and 307th Bomber Groups (B-24 "Liberators") stationed in Torokino and f lying to Rabaul. I would very much appreciate hearing from anyone who can help, and Dad would absolutely love to have contact with anyone connected with those days. Although he'll turn 93 soon, his memory is still sharp. Thank You Judy Loken Posted: 01/09/2005 Ted Geuther cjtg@optonline.net My father, Walter J. Geuther of Franklin, NJ served as Tech.
