He was a pilot of a B-24 and later a flight instructor. He served in the Pacific in the 13th Air Force, 307th bomb group, 372nd bomb squadron. It is my understanding that he never lost a crew member and flew over 50 combat missions. When his tour was up, his former crew were all killed on their very next flight. My dad would not talk much about his missions except when he and I would talk about the war and only after a few beers. He did say that he was on a raid on Truk and of the 24 b-24s that made the raid only 4 made it back to base. He said he was sad to take the browning .50 caliber and pitch it out along with everything else that was not apermanent fixture and some that were. He also said his bombider was the best and they usually lead the raid so all the zeros would line up on their plane.He also said that they lubed the brownings with rubbing alcohol so each one would put out 1200 rounds per minute. I am at work in a coal fired power plant at night and do not have his box of stuff. I beieve had 5 or 6 oak leaf clusters and a couple of presidental citations. My dads name was SSG Vade V Hamma and was a long ranger. He returned home to Brady Montana and farmed the rest of his life. He passed away in April of 1994 at age 75. He and my mom had 7 kids and had a good life. I read on this web site that the archives place burned up so thought this might be of help. While on a mission in a B-24D on October 10, 1943, the plane was shot down by Japaneese Zero fighter aircraft. The plane and crew were never found. I would love to hear from anyone who may have known him. I would also recommend the book "Scootin' Thunder" by Beth Houser. Beth's father, Bob Houser, served in the 13th and the book is his story. It is a wonderful read, and makes you feel as though you are actually there in the midst of the war. "Buddy" Miller (13061921), passed away some years ago but left me with many photos of the Philippines including AAF members and aircraft that (I assume) are part of the 17th PRG. He was a bomber commander at the 13th AAF Headquarters, in the Phillipines. In early 1944 he volunteered to accompany 5 bombing missions as a tail gunner with 3 Bomb Groups - 3 missions with the 42nd Bomb Group (on a B-25), and 2 missions with the 307th and 5th Bomb Groups (on a B-24 "Liberator"). I would love to have contact with anyone (or a relative) who was with the 13th AAF during WW2, especially anyone who was on those bomb runs. I would also love to see photos from those times. He was flying a P-40F for the 347th Fighter Group, 68th Fighter Squadron. His Missing Air Crew Report (MACR 580) is on order from the Air Force Historical Records Agency (AFHRA) at Maxwell AFB. I would relish any information from surviving members of his unit or family members of those men who might have known him and have photos or stories to share. He was lost on a flight from Russell IS. to Rabaul on January 14, 1944. The flight was piloted by 1st. LT. Ross B. Lemmon. This is all of the information I have been able to obtain to date. My uncle, Stanley M. Rovinsky was the gunner on this flight. B-25D-20 41-30566 Missing on January 14, 1944 MACR #1668 MACR #1668 is actually 'missing' from the microfiche at the National Archives. MACR #1668 was checked out in 1948 by 'Alan - AGO' and was not available when the microfilm was made. Here is some additional information about the mission from the microfilm of the 13th AF, 42nd BG, 70th BS: On January 14, 1944 the following crew failed to return from a night attack against LAKUNAI AIRDROME. 1st Lt. Ross B. Lemmon Pilot 1st Lt. Lowell Wathen Co-Pilot 1st Lt. David L. Somerville Bomb-Nav. S/Sgt. Arthur L. Thompson Engineer S/Sgt. Stanley M. Rovinsky Radio Operator-Gunner S/Sgt. Galen A. Day Gunner This equates to squadron Mission #75, a nighttime mission with airplanes gone from 0145-0630 local. The remarks for the mission indicate "Bad Weather, Narium, and Buka, Lt. Lemmon failed to return." From the 42 BG Microfiche: Mission #75: 14 Jan 1944 Vunakanau and Lakunai Airfields (11,500) 5 unmod (B25s) 7 mod (B25s). Here is some additional information from 'The Crusaders', Chapter 10, P 64... The 14th (January) saw a double-header staged against Vunakanau and Lakuani. Vunakanau was hit, but Likani had to be passed up, and bombs intended for it were dropped on New Ierland and Buka. Lieut. Ross B. Lemmons, JR., and crew, of the 70th failed to return from this mission... He and his crew were shot down in a B-24 enroute on a bombing mission in late 1944. I have the entire story on CD that was produced by Armed Forces radio in 1960. RG joined the USAAC on 2 March, 1943. His seperation data show's he departed the states on 5 April 1944, destination A-P. date of arrival 14,April, 1944. While in the A-P theatre he was with the 13th Air Force, 5th Bomb Group, 72nd Squadron as tail gunner on a B24 by the name of " Squirrely Shirley". I will attach a picture of Squirrely Shirley that I got from a book my brother had. I recall thru past conversation with my brother that this photo was taken after he had left to return to the states as he had 44 missions. I will also attach two photos, one single photo of his pilot and another of the crew that he flew from the states to the A-P with. As I recall, that pilot took a Jap 20mm in the chest on one of their missions. At this date, we can find no ID of any of the crew. The name of his plane was the Flying Gator and I know one of the pilots was Goerge Hoffler, He flew on the Christmas Eve bombing run over Wake Island in 1942. The younger members of my family would like to know something of their father/grandfather/greatgrandfather and asked me put together a history of this man. My dad, John Teachout, was a member of the 13th A.F. last stationed on Morotai. He is pictured playing trombone with the group. Sadly, he was permanently blinded by shrapnel in an explosion on January 1, 1945. He has stated, sometimes, that this was an accident, and sometimes this was due to enemy attack. He has understandably been unwilling to discuss any details of this tragic event in his life. He is now a victim of Alzheimers and will never be able to relay any further information about the events of January 1st. Can you tell me if the Morotai airbase sustained an attack by Japanese bombers on the1st of January of 1945? Or do you know of a source of information about the history of the 13th air force that might contain detailed information regarding events of the 1st of January, 1945?
