Photo Gallery #2

The airplane on the left is "The City of Springfield", a Gee Bee Model "Z" made by the
Granville Bros. in 1931. It set a record that year and won the Thompson trophy. Compare
the photo on the right of the airplane used in the Disney film "The Rocketeer". You will
notice the similarity. The airplane that Cliff Secord flys in the comic book as well as the
film is based on the airplane on the left. The original plane was black on yellow as was
the plane in the comic book and the beginning of the movie. The black on white paint
scheme on the right was a re-paint for the ending of the film.

The airplane on the left is also "The City of Springfield". Compare it to the picture on the
right. That picture is of a "City of Springfield" patch showing the original paint scheme.

The airplane on the left is a Gee Bee R-1 made by the Granville Bros. in 1932 and was
flown to another speed record and the Thompson trophy by Jimmy Doolittle. Compare it
to the photo on the right of a Gee Bee R-1 patch. You will notice the plane is shorter than
the Model "Z" and that the paint scheme is red on white.
The patches are available from Friedl Enterprises.
