In Alma's day there were no electric amplifiers, no microphones, no wired speakers, nothing common to what we take for granted today. When she recorded her records she sang into a 'megaphone' - a cone shaped horn, with a needle at the end of it to 'cut' the record, and that was about it! So when you play a mint condition record of hers it still sounds as though she was singing through the megaphone; with practicaly no 'high end' sounds (S's and T's for example, as though the 'treble' control (and even the bass) was turned all the way down)! This recording arrangement, though advanced for it's time, was still too poor to record instruments like violins, bass, and drum cymbols ect... effectivly, so there use was genneraly avoided. Therefore, making the best of what they had, they commonly used instruments that were loud (not needing amplifiers, such as brass and woodwinds ect..) thus the orchestral music of Alma's time differs greatly from what we're familiar with in today's digital recordings.
Now-a-days we can digitaly remaster those old recordings, but we still can't take more from them than what is on the records, thus we must consider the recording methods of that time, and recondition our 'musical ear' even should we hear the still greatly improved digitized recordings of Alma and others from those days of old!
