Several years ago my father, Richard Watson Shevalier, and I {Richard Watson Shevalier III} did some geneology research on the Shevaliers. I intend on placeing some of the information we gathered here to help anyone else (and I know their are others) interested in the name. I also intend on writing down (before I forget) everything I can remember about my Grandparents and Mother and Father, who my sons will unfortunately never get to know.
First of all, let me clear up how the III came to be attached to the end of my name.
VERSION 1: My paternal grandfather's brother was supposed to be named Watson Richard Shevalier, but the nurse seems to have made a mistake, and put down Richard Watson Shevalier on the birth certificate. So while he was always my Dad's Uncle Wat, when my Dadwas named for him it was Richard Watson that went on the certificate (not a Jr. and while really a II, since Uncle Wat never went by R.W.S. it really wasn't). When I was born and it was decided that I should by all rights be the III, so it was (not ever officially or anything) attached to the end of my name, and the rest, as they say, is history.
VERSION 2 (most plausable to my way of thinking): My paternal grandfather wanted to name my Dad after his brother, and when he told the nurse Watson Richard, she wrote down Richard Watson by mistake. Since there was NO Richard Watson before he wasn't a Jr. or a II, but since I was the third person to have the names in some combination it was decided that I should be the III. Isn't it funny how the exact nature of family things can be lost over time.
In any event, you will never see three father son's in a row with Richard Waston Shevalier as their name (at least not before my time).
