I would recommend this rig to ANYONE looking to get into HF. I have never had a problem with it, (once an initial bad crystal was replaced) and it has served me well.
Antennas: A-99 fiberglass vertical, Mosley CL-36 6 element tribander Yagi, Inverted L wire ant. cut for 80M
Mobile Rig: Yaesu FT-8100R
nice little mobile rig...
I like the FT-8100R, but it was not my first choice. I originally had an FT-8500 that was truly an awesome radio. It had every feature I could want, but after nine months it broke to the point that Yaesu couldn't fix it (they tried 3 times) and so they replaced it with the FT-8100R (the FT-8500 is no longer in production). The FT-8100R is not without its share of problems. In certain instalations, with VHF set in VFO-B (the right side VFO) there is a bad feedback squeel in the audio. The techs at Yaesu said that it was because the VFO is too close to the audio circuit and they couldn't shield it because it would loose sensitivity. So, I live with it. The strange part is that it only happens in certain instalations and not always.
I like the increased recieve range (over the FT-8500), but I do miss the alpha display, and I REALLY miss the "Mr. Potatohead" microphone with all controls on it. I drive a full sized Ford Bronco, and it is a LONG stretch sometimes to get to the radio (especially in traffic).
