PA State Game Lands 157 sits among the rolling hills of northern Bucks County. Also known as Haycock Mountain, it is strewn with boulders that seem to take on anthropomorphic attributes as you walk among them. After a while it is apparent that they have formed communities and stand silently watching the human visitors. Are they benevolent?
Find the place where rout 611 meets rout 412. Follow 412 north to Stony Garden Rd and turn Rt. Look for # 1984 on the Rt. And you will find the parking lot on the left.
Take the trail at the South corner of the lot and follow the red blazes. Soon you will see some white blazes along the trail too. At # 587 the trail turns left. Follow this Red, and Tacky trail, and you will find a boulder field on your left. Enter the boulder field and find the white blazes painted on a rock that send you SE through it until you meet up with a white/red/white trail. Follow this trail at 120d through the woods. You will cross an intersecting trail (red/white/blue), but you continue on your SE course, and start to climb. Painted blazes are faint, but tacky. Follow this tacky stuff till it ends and then continue up hill to the SE (120d) through the woods.
There are boulders all around, but you will see some very large ones above you on the hill. You can immagine faces in those rocks. Some are human, while others are not.....There is a big boulder, like the "king of the hill" resting atop a a ledge of boulders. Climb up and around to the back side of the "king" and find a trio of trees with a box at their base.
From this first box, go 100d for 100 paces
Find your self standing among more rock faces.
The boulders are even bigger here. There is one flat expanse of rock that juts
out over the ground, forming a veranda. Climb under its shelter and go on in....all
the way down....there it is, box #2 on the ground in the leaves.
Stand on top of the veranda and head due north. Keep your eyes peeled for a faint trail, and when you find it turn right and follow it to the top. There is a convergence here. Red/ White/Blue/White/.... very confusing. Just take the trail that heads north and soon you will find yourself by some even BIGGER boulders on your right. These rock beings are definitely gathered in a community. What are they discussing? Wander, climb, crawl, sit, listen.....
Go back to the trail and continue to follow it north and back down the hill. There are some faint white blazes to follow, but the trail is pretty clear. The going is pretty easy now except for the large downed trees that must be negotiated. Pass the 750 mark on your right and eventually the trail turns NW. Follow it past the pine grove. Soon an old rock wall appears on your left, and perhaps you can hear some traffic noise ahead as the trail emptys you out onto a road. Before you get to the road there is a large tree blocking the path. To the right is its broken stump, and at its base....Box #3! There is no log book here. Just a bonus stamp if you made it this far.
Make a left and follow the road back to the parking lot.
