Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is a 2,400-acre natural area straddling the Kittatinny Ridge in eastern Pennsylvania. Established in 1934, it was the world's first refuge for raptors. During the last 64 years, the Sanctuary has become an international center for conservation, education, and research about raptors.

Be advised that this box is located in a place that is most suitable for mountain goats, and is not recommended  hunting for small children or adults in poor physical shape.  Please read the disclaimer/waiver of responsibility, and take it seriously.

From the entrance gate, take the Scenic lookout trail (orange) toward the North Lookout. Along this trail you can see the Kittatinny Ridge  and an exposed area of white rocks to the north.

At the North Lookout, sit a while and watch the raptors flying down the ridge. Did you bring your binoculars?

When you're ready, follow the orange blazes to the east, right off the end of the Lookout where they turn blue.

Continue on the blue blazed trail past the place where it joins the yellow trail.

There is a tree along the trail that invites you to sit, and you can if you are tired, but the box isn't there.

Follow the blue/yellow trail to the place of exposed white rocks that you saw at the beginning. If you are familiar with the area, you can see "The Pinnacle" out to the south east.

Find the old twisted oak. It has hemlocks growing from its base on the north and east side, mountain laurel growing on the south east and a small cairn at its base on the west.

You know what to do.

If you are hiking on the AT, you should be able to get to this box by taking the blue blazed trail to the west at the top of the Kittatinny Ridge near Eckville. Take this trail past where it joins with the yellow trail, and thence to the place of exposed white rock. The distance from the AT to the box is estimated to be about 1.8 miles.
