It sooths the soul of the savage beast

Music is more than background in our lives, and its more than simple entertainment. It adds another layer of depth to the complex tapistry of our existance. We are especially interested in folk music, because it  is evolving current culture which reaches us often without the benefit of specific language, and we can understand it without any special translation.

The Space Family has been involved in the local music scene for more than 25 years. You can find us volunteering at various events, venues and even a radio station.

• Godfrey Daniel's Listening Room - Located in Bethlehem, PA. It is nationally known venue for Folk and Alturnative acoustic music. This small performance space has room for only about 100 listeners. Concerts are held several times a week for a very low admission price. Performers come from all over the world to play on Godfrey's stage.                                                                                                                                                                                    

• Philadelphia Folk Festival / Philadelphia Folksong Society- The grandaddy of em all! This music festival has been around for 39 years.  It is presented by the Philadelphia Folk Song Society. Almost any  notable folk musician has played at the Philly Folk Fest. The fest is held in Schwenksville, PA at the end of August every year, and is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, some of whom have been at every festival since the first one. The Folk Song Society also sponsors a series of excellent monthly concerts in Fort Washington PA which are free to its members.                                                                                                                                                                        

• Appel Farm Arts & Music Festival - a one day event held at the beginning of June near Elmer, NJ. Some of the best of contemporary folk and alternative performers grace the two stages. It always seems to be a sunny day when we go there.                                                                                                

• Falcon Ridge Folk Festival - A great weekend of music and dance presented on four stages. This festival is especially loved by contra dancers for its huge dance floor, set up under a tent. The whirling and twirling goes on until the wee hours each night. The festival is held in July at a farm in Hillsdale New York, near the Masssechusets border.

Old Songs Festival  - Another fine summer event held on the weekend nearest the summer solstice at the Altemont Fair grounds near Albany New York. The festival includes three days of workshops concerts and dancing, presented on stages both indoors and out. Usually a particular style of music or instrument is featured each year. For those interested in traditional singing, there are several workshops for Sacred Harp and Shape Note throughout the weekend.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          

  North American Folkmusic and Dance Alliance - An organization that ties it all together. Folk, Alternative and Acoustic music are barely a blip on the radar screen of popular culture, even though the roots of said popular culture are continually fed from folk sources. The Folk Alliance is an umbrella that protects and promotes all of this music on the margins. If you are involved in this kind of music, and want to be more effective at promoting yourself as a performer, or your venue or organization, or even if you are thinking ablut getting involved check out the Folk alliance. They hold a wonderful confrence each year in a different North American city.
