Who We Are
The United Church of Christ is a young church rooted in the Christian faith of a centuries-old heritage. Our current membership in the United States is 1.5 million members. The United Church of Christ came into being in 1957 with the merger of the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church. We trace our roots back to the pilgrims, to the German and Swiss settlers of Middle Colonial America, and to the German Evangelical Immigrants of the Mid-West.
Through the years, people of other backgrounds have joined us. As a “united and uniting” church, we are ecumenical and we are open to all individuals who seek a fuller life through faith. We not only celebrate the differences that each person brings to our fellowship, but we celebrate in faith the Christ that unites us.
We try to express our Christian faith through responsible action in our daily lives. In response to Jesus helping those in need, the United Church of Christ supports numerous colleges, hospitals, urban centers, and homes for children, the elderly and the mentally challenged throughout the United States.
In response to Jesus’ reaching out to all people in the world, we support educational, clinical, agricultural, relief and informational programs in many developing nations. We seek to be a believing and caring people, because to believe is to care and to care is to do.
