The Brown Family Farm

Owned By 3 Generations

Jacob Brown, Alvin Brown, and David Brown

Jacob Brown received the Patent to this farm in 1810 at age 44 yrs. The farm is just off Kirk's Mills Road, close to Rte 272 with the Octorara Creek as the southern border of the farm, as seen in the map below.

Jacob died in 1861, and the next map shows his farm as "Estate of Jacob Brown". (Go to the right of the map, and look for Kirks Mills Rd and Rte 272. Look for the curve in the Octorara Creek just above Blackburns Ford). Other places to look for are: Friends M M (Monthly Meeting), and other Brown farms. Just north of Eastland Monthly Meeting is the farm of Wm (William) Griffith, who is Alvin Brown's father-in-law.

An 1875 and an 1899 map shows Alvin Brown as the owner. Alvin dies in 1916 and his wife in 1917. However, his wife Anna Mary Griffith and three of their children attended Penn Hill Quaker Meeting until "8 mo., 18, 1900". Alvin and Anna Mary are buried in Eastland Quaker Meeting cemetary.
The 1875 map is also interesting because the Griffith family farm is now shown as "Wid Wm Griffith", ie, the Widow of William Griffith. He died in 1867, and his widow, Susan Hutton Pugh, now owns the farm.

Also, just north of Alvin Brown's farm, the map indicates property owned by "Missrs Brown". Did Jacob provide for some unmarried daughters? By 1899 that piece of ground no longer shows their name. Also the Widow Griffith no longer owns her farm, although she did not pass away until 1913.

Eventually Alvin Brown gave it to his son, David C. Brown and daughter-in-law Emma N. Brown, who were married in 1909. On the 1899 map, note on the left the name Cauffman (a family name) and the name McLaughlin. Are these the McLaughlin's who raised Emma Norris?
