Notes and Links

Thomas Dewey was the ancestor of Admiral George Dewey, the philosopher John Dewey, and Melvil Dewey, inventor of the Dewey decimal system.

Robert Williams was the ancestor of Louisa May Alcott, Eli Whitney, and Orville and Wilbur Wright.

John Root was also an ancestor of Louisa May Alcott.

Several other descendents of John Root and Mary Ashley also wound up in Great Barrington, MA, where one of them, Joshua Root, 3rd married Abigail Dewey's sister, Bethia (who was his second cousin once removed).  After Isaac Preston died in 1785, Abigail and her children moved to Oxford, NY in company with Joshua and Bethia.  In succeeding generations there were multiple intermarriages among the Roots, Prestons, and Padgets of Oxford.
