Worlds of Wonder

Gathered here are the very best stories about the unlikely twists and turns of human history that I know how to tell.  My motive is a subversive one and involves nothing less than the overthrow of the old, deterministic 20th century paradigm, in which history was cast as the mechanical unfolding of an inevitable sequence of developmental "stages" and human beings were at most the passive agents of this process.  In its place, I offer for your pleasure a fifty thousand year long saga of wild improvisation and creative problem-solving, in which humans have time after time entered into a fruitful partnership with the cosmic forces around them to become the active masters of their own destiny.

The Paleolithic Indo-Europeans  Once upon a time, the world was emptier than it is now and our ancestors wandered through it freely, driven by the expectation of finding marvels just beyond the next hill.  Those days are long gone, but their spirit remains in our dreams, in our stories, and in the very languages we speak.

Magical Earth   Short sketches on the wonder-workers of the Paleolithic and Neolithic.  How shamans, alchemists, and cultural revolutionaries created the world we know.

Speculations on the Tarot  Origins, meaning, and cross-cultural references.  (Under construction.)
