The pictures on this page are of recent work done on my new Poolewood lathe.  There's less talk and more pictures than elsewhere on my site.  Please feel free to contact me with questions, comments, and critiques.

All right, I lied.  This piece was turned on my old Nova, but I didn't get it finished until recently.  This is a piece of curly maple branch with bark inclusions, and the pith running through part of it.  Dimensions are approximately 10" across and 2" high.  I have no idea why it came out so orange in the picture.  I want to blame it on the tungsten balanced lights, but my other pictures below didn't have the same problem.

A simple bowl in boxelder.  This bowl was turned from wet to finish in one session because I found the pith still in it after geting the shape to where I wanted it.  It warped a little, but not too badly.  13 1/2" D by 4" H.  Finished with Minwax Tung Oil Finish and buffed.  I saturated the pith with CA glue and it is holding well so far.

Can you guess?  It's yellowwood with some bug holes for interest.  10" D by 4 1/4" H, finished with Minwax Tung Oil Finish and buffed.

This piece was a real challenge.  It is a honey locust burl I acquired shortly after buying my first real lathe (a Jet 1236).  It was too big for the Jet, and I did not have the skill to do it justice, so I threw it in the pile, and it sat there for six years.  It is quite irregular, and was out of balance from start to finish.  The Poolewood handled it with no problems at all.  Overall dimensions are 14" across at the widest point, 10" across at the narrowest, and almost 5" high.  I left it thick to show off the rough edge and keep the inclusions strong.  Finished with Minwax Tung Oil Finish and buffed.  (hint  NEVER buff a burl with all these little bark inclusions unless you enjoy picking out millions of little bits of lint.)

Hollow form in boxelder, turned for the final resting place of a friend's cremated dog.  Not shown is the walnut lid.  Approximately 7" H by 6" D Finished with Minwax Tung Oil Finish and buffed.

This is a pretty spectacular piece of maple.  It has everything, burl, curl, bark inclusions, and spalting.  I can only hope I did it justice.  The scary part is, I almost threw it on the burn pile.  It was all dirty and had several checks that looked pretty deep.  The only thing that kept me from doing so was the impending visit of a friend of mine who gloated for months after finding a similar piece in my burn pile.  So I turned it, and here's what I got.  Approximately 6 1/" H by 5" D. Finished with Minwax Tung Oil Finish and buffed.

Osage orange, finished with Minwax Tung Oil Finish.  This bowl has not been fully finished or buffed yet.  I'm thinking of using some Waterlox Marine Finish I have laying around to try and preserve the color for a while.  Right after turning it was so bright it practically glowed in the dark.  Bowl size is approximately 10" D x 2 3/4" H.

Foot detail of the above bowl.  This one is an "innie", as I wanted it to look like it just melted into the table top.
