More Things To See

Just south of Lone Pine is Diaz Lake. It has an elevation of 3,700 feet above sea level, and offers year round fishing. They also have campgrounds, picnic areas and playgrounds to let you relax and enjoy the scenery. If you are a little more active, they also allow jet skiing and water skiing during the summer months.

If you are interested in history, take a short drive north on 395 to see the remnants of one of the relocation camps set up by the United States during World War II to house Japanese Americans. The guard booth at the front gate to Manzanar still stands as a monument to something less than noble that was done during the war. Originally an orchard and farm, the camp was the first of ten internment centers established to contain Japanese Americans following Japan's 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Perceived as enemy sympathizers and security risks, 11,000 Japanese Americans were held here from March 1942 to 1945. Vistors can walk through the grounds for no charge. Some of the roads and concrete pads are visible. It is a site that will definitely make you think.
