English AKAs for Movies

Identifying films can be a real challenge when you know an English language title and the film may have originally been issued in another language or under another title. Finding information on films requires the use of reference works either in print or online. This web page contains links to some of the best movie resources on the Web and descriptions of others I have found most useful.

HELPFUL WEBSITES:
1. Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/ is the most comprehensive source of movie information on the Internet, although still weak in Asian film information.

2. All Movie Guide http://www.allmovie.com/ generally not as comprehensive as Internet Movie Database but surprisingly good for countries such as Thailand and Philippines.

3. Video Search of Miami cult movie video club http://www.vsom.com/ lists movies not generally available in the US and the catalog listings often give identifying information on original titles and directors. Many of the films are in dubbed or subtitled English versions the titles of which do not appear in Internet Movie Database or All Movie Guide.

4. Video Wasteland http://www.videowasteland.com/ rents cult movies and trash often not available easily including sexploitation and Asian movies.

5. Internet Adult Film Database http://www.iafd.com/ gives information on adult movies available on videotape.

6. TV Guide movie database http://www.tvguide.com/movies gives information on movies released in the US.

7.Home Film Festival http://www.homefilmfestival.com offers rentals by mail of classic and international movies.

8. Chinese Movie Database http://www.dianying.com/en/ offers movie information from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China.

9. Hong Kong Movie Database http://www.hkmdb.com/ offers Cantonese and Mandarin titles for Hong Kong movies.

10. Bollywood Movie Database http://www.bollywood.de/database lists movies of India.

11. Brazil Movie Database http://cinemabrasil.org.br/indexen.html

12. Polish Cinema Database http://wwwtech.net.pl/Filmy/

HELPFUL REFERENCE BOOKS:
