"R"
R- Designated letter for light rain.
Rain Fall Intensities:
R Designated letter for moderate rain.
R+ Designated letter for heavy rain.
Radar: "Radio Detection & Ranging" In "Weather" An instrument which transmitts and receives electromagnetic waves for detecting & determining
the speed, height, location & type of precipitation.
Radar Beam: A small focused beam of energy radiated from a radar.
Radar Chart Codes:
NA: Radar Observations Not Availabe.
NE: No Echo.
OM: Out Of Service For Maintenance.
Radar Echo:Electromagnetic waves scattered back to the radar receiver and displayed on the PPI Scope from targeted precipitation.
Radar Ground Clutter: Reflection from trees, buildings, hills in close around the radar.
Radar Scattering: The process of radar energy being scattered by targets back to the radar.
Radar Scope Ground Clutter: Echoes on the radar PPI Scope which indicates area of mountains, buildings, etc at a close range to the radar antenna.
Radar RHI Scope:Radar Range & Height Scope: The radar scope which indicates the height of the precipitation in feet above the surface of the earth.
Radar PPI Scope:Radar Planned Position Indicator Scope: On a radar the scope that shows the direction (In Degrees) and location of precipitation
in (Miles) from the radar location
Radar TR SwitchAn electronic switch which is part of a radar which automaticly switches from transmit to reveive.
RADAT: In a weather observation "RADAT" indicates freezing level data.
Radon Gas: Decaying Uranium Gas.
Radiosonde: A meteorological weather instrument with a radio transmitter which is carried aloft by a large helium filled
balloon upto and beyond 100,000 feet. This instruments samples the atmosphere and transmits back to a ground radio receiver temperature, humidity, pressure.
Radiosonde Observation: Tracking a radiosonde aloft to determine: Temperature: Pressure: Humidity: Wind Speed & Wind Directions: up to 100,000+ feet.
RAICG: In a weather observation "RAICG" indicates icing data.
Rain: Falls is the forms of drops larger than 0.02 inch (0.5 mm)
1. Rainfall: Light:.............Up to 0.10 inch per hour, maximum 0.01 inch in 6 minutes.
2. Rainfall: Moderate:......0.11 inch to 0.30 inch per hour, more than 0.01 inch to 0.03 inch in 6 minutes.
3. Rainfall: Heavy:............More than 0.30 inch per hour, more than 0.03 inch in 6 minutes.
Rainbow: The Sun must be to your back to see a "Rainbow".
Rainbow Colors:Color of the rain bow. ROY-G-BIV: Red: ORANGE: YELLOW: GREEN: BLUE: INDIGO: VIOLET:--
Raingauge: A weather instrument used to measure how much precipitation has fallen.
Rain Shadow: Dry conditions which often extend hundreds of miles to the lee side of mountain ranges.
Range Height Indicator: (RHI) A radar monitor scope which displays the height of precipitation.
Rankin Temperature Scale: Named after "William John Macquorn Rankine" Scottish engineer and physicist.
Where at a temperature of Absolute Zero molecular energy is minium -459 degrees R. The freezing point of water is 492 degrees R.
The boiling point of water is
RAOB: A radiosonde observation.
RAREP: Acronym for "Radar Weather Report".
RAWIN: A rawinsonde observation.
RAWINSONDE: Tracking a radiosonde aloft to determine the wind speed and directions up to 100,000+ feet.
Red Sprites: Large dim flashes of light which appear above thunderstorms.
Refrigation: The process of removing heat from objects.
Relative Humidity: The amount of moisture present in air as to the amount of moisture the air can
hold at a given temperature, expressed in percent.
Ricter Scale:This scale was made by the American Geologist: Charles W. Richter in 1935, which measures the magnitude of an earthquake.
Ridge:A large area of high pressure on a weather map.
Rime Ice: White or milky and opaque deposit of ice on an aircraft wing.
Roll Cloud:A mean looking cloud which spins & is located behind the gust front.
Rossby Waves:Discovered in the late 1930's by: Carl G. Rossby: a Swidish-American Meteorologist for whom they are named.
Rossby Waves occur well above the friction level. They are steering currents and are at the 500 mb 18,000 feet level and higher.
Rotating Bean Ceilometer: A weather instrument which is used to determine the height of clouds about the ground.
Rotor Cloud: Located in the front of a thunderstorm.
RVR: Runway Visual Range: The horizontal visibility a pilot will see down a designated runway.
RW- Designated letter for light rain showers.
RW Designated letter for moderate rain showers.
RW+ Designated letter for heavy rain showers.
