My Life: By Charles A. Giannetta

"Our 4th Of July Week Camping Trip: "1956""

"My Life" "Charles A. Giannetta"
Meteorologist - Professor Bath, Pa. USA.
"Our 4th Of July Week Camping Trip: "1956""

When I was a your boy and well into my teens I loved to fish. One week during the summer of 1956 myself and some friends went on a weeks camping and fishing trip over the 4th. of July week to a lake called: "North Jersey" in Gouldsboro, Pa. USA. which is about 25 to 30 miles southeast of Scranton, Pa. USA.
The lake is now private and there are quite a lot of homes that have been built around the lake. I also beleive the name of the lake is changed to: Big Bass Lake. I'm not sure. One of these days I will go up that way for a drive and check out the name.
I was 20 years old and not married at the time we went on this camping trip.
We started out from our homes in Dunmore, Pa. USA. We filled the car with all we needed for camping. Food...Clothes for the week...Fishing Gear...etc. I did not want a gun with us, however, we did take our hunting knives and a first aid kit. back then we did not have cell phones or CB radios. We were pretty much on our own camping for the week. If we needed help for any reason we would have to row back across the lake to get some aid.
We drove to the lake in Gouldsboro via route 611. There wasn't any super highways back then like there are now. We parked the car. Rented a boat for the week. I don't remember how much the boat cost but it wasn't much. We filled the boat with our gear. We rowed across the lake to the opposite shore which was away from homes and people. We rowed back and forth twice for we had a lot of gear for the 3 of us.

Above picture is me rowing the boat with our camping gear.

When we got to our camp site across the lake we began to unload the boat. We did not have a tent, however, we did have a good size tarp. We found two 4 inch thick trees we cut about 6 to 7 feet long.
We dug two holes about 2 feet deep and planted the tree poles in them. After setting the tree poles in the dirt, we ran a rope from pole to to pole. We then draped the large tarp over the rope and made ourselves a tent. It worked out pretty good as you can see in the pictures below. The home made tent worked our great for the week.

In the above pictures is my wife Gini and others. You can see the home made tent that we made.

The above picture is me fishing in the boat.

Thats me in the above picture.

If you look close in the background you can see a lantern hanging in the tree which my dad Charles senior let us use for the week.
That same Lantern belonged to my Grandfather: "William Giannetta."

Picture of my Dad's Lantern that we used on our camping trip. I now own the Lantern. The Lantern is quite old.

If you look close at the picture near the top across the lake there are homes
This is where we rented the boat and then rowed across the lake to the campsite.

Along this area with houses are railraod tracks that ran from
Scranton through the Poconos into New Jersey and New Your.
Every day the the trains would pass by. One of these trains each day was the:
Phoebe Snow"
on its way to New Jersey & New York. Every day the
"Phoebe Snow"along with the other trains would pass by and
give some loud long whistles.

The train whistles sounded "GREAT". To be there
to hear them and see them.

I only wish I took pictures of them as they were passing by.

"Who New"!!

In this picture our friend that visited us during the week.

In this picture unpacking our gear.

Getting ready to do some fishing.

More to come...
