"Solar Halos"

Pictures I took of a "46 Degree Solar Halo" looking southwest from our front yard on Tuesday Dec. 10, 2002 at
2pm est. It wasn't the best halo but the first we have seen in a long time. Just in time for the
new digital camera I bought.
There are two types of "Solar Halos" . One which is a 22 degree halo and the other which is
a 46 degree halo of the sun.
The 22 degree Solar Halo is produce by the sun's rays being refracted through an ice crystal
from one side to the other.
The 46 degree Solar Halo the sun's rays are refracted from side to top as the rays pass through
the ice crystal.
A 46 degree halos is rarer than a 22 degree halo.
Both occur when the sun's rays pass through cirrostratus clouds which contain ice crystals.
The appearence of a Halo usually indicates the approach of rain or snow.
